HE 32-year-old suspected of massacring at least 80 young people at a summer camp and setting off a bomb in downtown Oslo that killed at least seven is a mystery to investigators: a right-winger with anti-Muslim views but no known links to hardcore extremists.
"He just came out of nowhere," a police official told The Associated Press.
Public broadcaster NRK and several other Norwegian media identified the suspected attacker as Anders Behring Breivik, a blond and blue-eyed Norwegian who expressed right-wing and anti-Muslim views on the internet.
Norwegian news agency NTB said Breivik legally owned several firearms and belonged to a gun club. He ran an agricultural firm growing vegetables, an enterprise that could have helped him secure large amounts of fertiliser, a potential ingredient in bombs.
But he didn't belong to any known factions in Norway's small and splintered extreme right movement, and his criminal record consisted of some minor offences, the police official said.

"He hasn't been on our radar, which he would have been if was active in the neo-Nazi groups in Norway," he said. "But he still could be inspired by their ideology."
He spoke on condition of anonymity because those details had not been officially released by police. He declined to name the suspect.
Neo-Nazi groups carried out a series of murders and robberies in Scandinavia in the 1990s but have since kept a low profile.
"They have a lack of leadership. We have pretty much control of those groups," the police official said.
Breivik's registered address is at a four-storey apartment building in western Oslo. A police car was parked outside the brick building early today, with officers protecting the entrance.
National police chief Sveinung Sponheim told public broadcaster NRK that the gunman's Internet postings "suggest that he has some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views, but whether that was a motivation for the actual act remains to be seen".
A Facebook page under Breivik's name was taken down late on Friday. A Twitter account under his name had only one Tweet, on July 17, loosely citing English philosopher John Stuart Mill: "One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests."
Police where interrogating the man, first at the scene of the shooting, and later at a police station in Oslo.
"It's strange that he didn't kill himself, like the guys that have carried out school shootings," the police official told AP. "It's a good thing that he didn't because then we might get some answers pointing out his motivation."
He said the attacks appeared to be the work of a lone madman, without links to any international terrorist networks. The attack "is probably more Norway's Oklahoma City than it is Norway's World Trade Center," he said referring to the 1995 attack on a federal building in Oklahoma City by domestic terrorists.
Investigators said the Norwegian carried out both attacks - the blast at the prime minister's office in Oslo and the shooting spree at the left-wing Labor Party's youth camp - but didn't rule out that others were involved. But the police official said it wouldn't be impossible for one man to carry out the attacks on his own.
"He's obviously cold as ice. But to get close to the government is easy. The streets are open in that area," he said.
Where have we heard that before?
This guy is a smoke screen.
Like Mcveigh. Just kind of popped up. Neo Nazis are allied with Muslims because of their hatred of the Jews.
Sounds like BS to me.
Pretty damned sophisticated, too.
The story is empty.
I need much more detail.
Which I’ll never get.
It doesn’t really make sense does it?
I can’t believe one guy did all that damage. Kill 80 people, in a forest? Something is missing here.
My hunch is that this guy is a sleeper aligned with terrorists, much like McVeigh was. Everything else is just a smoke screen.
These party summer camps are breeding grounds for future left-wing leaders in Scandinavia. I am sure that what Breivik aimed to do was to strike fear to the Norwegian left-wing elite who send their children to these camps. This is where we have come. All is not well in western world.
It doesn’t exactly pass the smell test with flying colors, that’s for sure. a patsy perhaps?
>>This is a nut on my side. Conservative, christian and anti immigration.<<
I’m not buying it for one minute.
Doesn’t sound anything like a conservative or a Christian.
Plus he attacked Labor Party kids...

They would seem to be closer allied to him than Muslims. Why did he not attack a Mosque??
He really wanted to kill people from the labour party which is the ruling government party as well. And attacking the youths makes sense
Not sure how credible this is...
Suspected Norway bomber & shooter posted on websites with Christian fundamentalist tendencies: police official

I find it hard to believe that only one man is behind these attacks. They seemed simultaneous which is what Al Qaeda’s known to be able to do.
They are talking about him and showing his Facebook Page on Live TV out of Norway now. They broadcast in different languages. The pictures are so sad they are showing. Poor children. http://t.co/IKkeqRZ
It is true. But he does not seem extreme or violent. But very concerned about immigration and Islam. And against multicultural society. But he appears to be quite normal. I have seen much worse from others on websites. No one based on his writing could believe he was capable of mass-murder.
One lonely, socially awkward guy with no training, no connections, no history... HE secretly acquires the materials and knowledge to make several sophisticated bombs, acquires an authentic police uniform, possibly credentials, firearms and ammunition, uses them in a flawless tactical masterstroke capitalizing on diversion and chaos...???
Am I leaving anything out?
This one guy, this unknown evil genius, learned all this... what... playing World of Warcraft? Obtained all of these materials... how again?
I have to go with Occam on this one— it’s a LOT easier to believe that he had handlers. I’m not saying who or what they are, but right now my money is decidedly saying he had help.
Christianity is about love and forgiveness not murder. Christianity and Conservatism is about celebrating life and making the best out of what life as to offer with the freedoms endowed to us by our Creator. This guy is none of the above.
Also right now a thousand hollywood screen writers are typing their fingers to the bone and wearing out keyboards trying to get a plot of a conservative christian goes nuts into a television show somehow asap.
