If she didn't have the money, why didn't she get a court-appointed public defender? If she wanted a fancy, get-out-of-jail lawyer, why is that the Florida taxpayer's problem?

My question exactly. Why are the taxpayers on the hook for her dream team of lawyers???????

I'm going to take an unpopular position: I say that any time someone gets a 'not guilty' verdict, the state should pay the expenses they caused that person to incur.

She didn’t get a court-appointed public defender because Casey and/or her family initially hired Baez or contacted him and he made a court appearance for her. After that, she claimed she couldn’t afford an attorney and Baez was it. I am not sure at all how Baez got all of the others to join the team, but I believe that they worked it pro bono, probably just for the exposure that they all received.

And this is all a secret during the trial.
