the default isn’t a scare tactic, it’s real (and has consequences); But I’d prefer something short-term and work out the long-term...over time.

I think Wall Street and K Street lobbyists are out heavily pounding that very idea on the Hill - carrying Obama's water. I think they scare the crap out politicians (whom are very easily scared even in good times).

I'm not certain Boehner believes that Republican voters will abandon the party...just like GHW Bush didn't believe it. He thinks that stating his position - cut, cap and balance - then giving in to "the inevitable for the good of the country" will be enough to keep voters satisfied.

I think he may be miscalculating badly (something that isn't rare in politics, wherever they are practiced).

However, no deal should be supported with tax increases.
