I'm sure that there have been gangs in the history of humanity, but in the political realm, the original gang was Gang of Four. Mao Tse-tung's wife, a ChiCom broad, led a Gang of Four in an anti- something or other movement.
So a cultural revolution equaled murder. And Mao's wife, Mrs. Mao, led the Gang of Four against it. So this "gang of" crap can be traced back to the original brutal, murderous ChiComs.

I remember some years ago, I believe during the Clinton Administration, where the term “the people’s house” was once used to refer to the White House. I too, despise using terms right out of the Communist playbook.

Shortly after the Gang of Four thing (actually several years) I managed to pull off a GANG OF 24 in reference to the then USPS management team ~ who were busy running the train off the track.
It was beyond funny ~ and gained the attention we needed to get someone to care about removing some of them.
The various "GANG OF"s are self-appointed/annointed bodies of otherwise possibly meaningful folks who are out there biting off more than can chew in areas where they have no particular expertise and all to the exclusion of outside forces.
The original GANG OF FOUR meets that definition perfectly, and so does the current GANG OF SIX!
Think of it as an alternative to "Potential Darwin Awardee" ~ because all that'll do is get you added to the Secret Service suspects list.
