Same thing happens in the winter with the Windchill temperature. It’s not -20 below, it’s zero and that is bad enough.
I wonder how Rush feels about wind-chill readings.
So does water boil at 180 if it feels like 213?
I agree some of the motivation is paving the way for global warming propaganda. But, the other part is just sensationalism. There are so many outlets vying for the consumer’s attention, that they cooked, (pun intended), this “feels like” thing to get more notice.
The feels like is the analog to the wind chill in winter.
It’s nonsense, tell me the temperature, tell me the humidity, I can figure it out.
Dunno if I agree.
Maybe ‘feels like’ is just a bad term.
Like wind chill, it’s an additional affect that needs to be considered for a person to understand the effect of the weather on them when they venture out.
Mr. Limbaugh is a highly successful blowhard, with whom I generally agree on political matters.
Sometimes, as in this case, he just runs his mouth too much and lets his ignorance show.
95 in Tucson does NOT feel like 95 in Houston, understanding of which may be above his pay grade. He needs to stick with poking fun at politicos.
Spend some time in 95 degree heat and 20% humidity and some time in 95 degree heat with 80% humidity and tell me there’s no difference.
While the temperature is the same, in 80% humidity sweat doesn’t evaporate, effectively causing the body to cool less efficiently.
However a reasonably intelligent person doesn’t need a heat index to tell them that its damn hot. (Heat index of 109 degrees here right now.)
Still feels like 62 degrees here in the Pacific Northwest, and that’s not counting the wind chill. Been 10-15 degrees below normal all Summer. Our warmest temp of 80 lasted 72 minutes. There still making jokes about our 2011 Summer being 72 min long.
I’m hoping somebody can answer this one for me. I’ve had no luck finding the answer.
I understand the idea behind the heat index. It combines the effects of temperature and humidity to show what it “feels like” to the body.
The problem is that the temperature it “feels like” itself has a humidity level.
So if it “feels like” 90F, it feels like 90F at what humidity level? There is no such thing as temperature without a corresponding humidity level.
I have been saying the same thing. They are trying to tell me what or how I will feel? Nonsense.
The National Weather Service has issued something called an Excessive Heat Alert for our area today.
What exactly is “excessive”? And who besides the Creator of our plant is qualified to judge what “excessive heat” is?
There have been a few days this summer already whereas I was surprised at how nice of a day it was after hearing trumped up reports of how hot it was going to feel.
Then yesterday I also heard Rush speak of this heat index reporting and I have to wonder if there is now a push in the media to make it seem as if we are having unprecedented heat this summer.
i’m waiting for a report of “car temperature” to further evidence global warming.
reporter: the thermometer in my car is at 145 right now, and it’s just going to get hotter..
All in all it has been a mild summer so far. I live in Virginia and, in the end of July, this is the first heat wave we have had this year and it looks like it will last 4 days. We have had a few spot upper 90s days, but this is the first time it has stuck around for more than a day. Last year, there were several 2+ week long stretches like this.
Heat Indexes and Wind Chill are real numbers that represent equivalent dry and still temperatures for the same amount of time to have actual damage to your body.
I have been in actual temperatures ranging from 127°F down to -48°F.
I was once in an actual temp of -35°F and enough wind to make it -72°F. I speak from personal experience that the -35°F (wc -72°F) was FAR, FAR worse than the -48°F and no wind.
When it's 95 degrees and very humid, it feels like 95 degrees and humid. When it's 12 degrees and the wind is blowing at 40 mph, it feels like it's 12 degrees and windy.
They do the same thing with wind chill. It’s part of the media’s “we need to scare the crap out of you so you’ll pay attention to us” campaign.
I’m with Rush on this, but I am a simple man that uses his senses.
I’d be just fine with a thermometer that reads: “Too damn hot”, “just about right” and “too damn cold”.
Heck, I am still trying to figure out why we put sour cream in the refrigerator... to keep it from what?
Shouldn’t a hysterectomy be called a hers-terectomy?
I honestly didn’t need a warning sticker on my microwave that says it should never be used for drying my hair.
Life doesn’t really need to be that complicated.
I feel hotter than the temperature would indicate, and it is plenty hot. I’m going to drive to town in my diesel truck, air conditioner blowing, until my arthritis makes me “feel like” it is too cold.
Is that 116 with 100% humidity or 0% humidity?
