Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 418,000, the Labor Department said.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 410,000. The prior week's figure was revised up to 408,000 from the previously reported 405,000.

15 straight weeks above 400K and its still Unexpected? Isn't it absurd?

GOP needs to pound the message home this weekend: where are the jobs? They're busy pounding the message: We don't want to default either.

I’ve been following this crap for over 2 years and it’s always unexpected and it’s always been revised even lower after a couple of weeks...

But as expected, it’s Bush’s fault.

Always with the unexpected! And the previous week's numbers were revised upward "as expected"
To: RandallFlagg
Ive always wondered.... Since the prefix is "initial", these are newly unemployed, the aggregate of all 57 states. The total, initial and existing is in the millions.

I had read also that July is the end of the fiscal year for most (if not all) states, cities, and municipalities.
There have been cuts and hiring freezes at that level that are yet to be reflected in the unemployment numbers.
There were also about 10K jobs lost with the shuttering of all Borders stores, as I recall.

Maybe they need to find some new economists who aren’t so easily surprised.
To: Gondring
Have you ever hit exactly on the mark with your weekly estimate? It's either either higher than expected or lower--rarely right on the nose ("as expected"). If it is rarely right on the nose, then it isn't unexpected when "the nose isn't hit"...
The use of "unexpected" to which I object is that the authors claim the the worsening is unexpected. Bullshet. It's getting worse out there and it's easy to see. It would be unexpected for it to get better. And I think 0Fraudo is doing it on purpose. There is no other explanation.
Sorry for the vent in your general direction Gondring.

Yes...the GOP has done a terrible job of hammering this home. Everytime a Republican member of Congress is interviewed by the MSM, they need to be talking about this.
The media tries to pitch each “interview” to defend Obama...why do the Republicans allow them to get away with this. Only recently did Marco Rubio stand up to a CBS “reporter” and announce the truth...this economy is awful.

So it’s actually up 13,000 and not the 10,000 as reported.

But I thought Obozo said unemployment wouldn’t rise above 8% if his stimulus was approved? I’m surprised the lame street media don’t mention that! /s/

if the truth (actual unemployment + inflation) were reported, every day, both would be at double digits. lamestream protection for the zer0 is enormous, and actual totals for unemployment + inflation will only be reported in a three second report time-span or skipped over entirely. can't upset the zer0. one (in the lamestream media) could lose their income should zer0 see or hear (truth in reporting) the actual double digits truth.
