Boarded-up shops and a nearly empty parking lot provided the backdrop for former Masschusetts' Gov. Mitt Romneys visit today to a struggling shopping center near the intersection of Victory and Laurel Canyon boulevards.
Romney, presumed to be among the leading Republican contenders for the presidency in 2012, said President Barack Obamas economic policies have contributed to the decline of this and many other malls across America.
Proposing raising taxes did not put people back to work. Obamacare made it less likely for employers to want to hire people. The talk about cap-and-trade and higher energy costs made it less likely for people to want to invest here," Romney said.
Dozens of reporters surrounded Romney, along with Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian, who represents the area.
"Im disappointed he chose to use my neighborhood and one of my top economic priorities as essentially movie set for his production today," Krevkorian said in response to a reporter's question.
Krekorian, like just about everybody else on the L.A. City Council, is a Democrat. He said millions of federal stimulus dollars have helped his area maintain a medical clinic, law enforcement and other needs. He said its not fair of Romney to blame the president for a long-struggling mall.
Its in the state that its in today because of more than a decade of economic decline," Krekorian said.
Several dozen Romney supporters showed up, too. Irene DeBlasio of Studio City said she likes the former Massachusetts governor because he was a businessman who knows about the bottom line. She also noted another reason.
Hes got five sons, a beautiful wife, lots of grandchildren. Hes a typical American." Unlike, DeBlasio said, Obama.
Oh, I think hes ghastly. I think hes destroying the country. I think all his policies are anti-American, socialist, borderline communist manifesto," she said.
Many Republicans seem to agree that Obamas got to go, but theyre far from consensus on who ought to replace him.
Mike Schroeder, an Orange County resident who is the former chair of the state GOP, was Romney's political director in California during the last election. He won't be supporting him this time around, citing Romney's "disorganized" 2008 campaign and the healthcare plan Romney enacted in Massachusetts, which had been cited frequently by the president during his bid for national healthcare reform.
Shawn Steele, a Republican National committeeman from L.A., noted that other prominent Orange County Republicans who once supported Romney last week hosted an event for Texas Gov. Rick Perry: Now theyre co-hosting Rick Perry. That in itself is a story. When you have the Orange County machinery flipping from one candidate to another, that is something very significant," Steele said.
Perry was also in Los Angeles today at a hotel in the Century City neighborhood for an event coordinated by influential fundraiser Renee Croce, who helped raise millions of dollars for former California Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson. Perry has been traveling the nation to gauge his support among party loyalists, elected officials and donors, while fashioning the framework of what could become a national campaign.
Perry is attending more private meetings in California this week, and Steele thinks the Texan will announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president next month.
Among Republicans in the contest, Romney leads the money race and reported an $18.4 million haul in the second quarter.

[snip] >>>>Halloran: There's been much made about the antipathy in Texas between the so-called Bush country-club Republicans and the Perry wing of the state party. What was the genesis of that bad feeling and how do you think that might play out if he decides to run?
Smith: Remember that Rick Perry loosed this on the world himself when he endorsed Rudolph Giuliani for the Republican primary nomination in 2008. He was campaigning with Giuliani in Iowa and famously said that George W. Bush was not really a fiscal conservative. A telling moment was in the 2010 Republican primary for governor when Kay Bailey Hutchison, the senior U.S. senator for Texas, was running against Perry. Practically all of the old Bush folks Jim Baker, Karen Hughes, and on down they all supported Kay. They just don't think that Perry's their kind of guy. His political style is not their political style. His ideological style is not their style.
Halloran: Is the rift overstated?
Smith: Some Bush people say it's overblown. The view we have on it from the ground is that it is not overblown. The degree to which the Bush people decide to play in this next presidential race is going to be interesting. Are they going to come out and actively support a non-Perry candidate, or are they just going to stand down?
Halloran: Do you think Perry will run?
Smith: I don't think there's any question. It would be the head fake of all time if he were not running.<<<<

>>>Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central’s faux conservative commentator, summed it up thusly: “This man needs to be president. We haven’t had a Texas governor in the White House for almost three years.”
Democrats will do their best to brand Perry, who became governor when Bush left Texas for Washington, with a scarlet “B.”
“Being seen as the protégé of the worst president in history cannot be advantageous for Perry,” said Democratic consultant Paul Begala, a native Texan. “The problem is more about Bush than about Texas per se.”
........Perry is not seeking to distance himself from Bush and is “proud of his time campaigning with and serving together with George W. Bush,” said Carney.
He suggests, however, that Perry “will be judged on his entire record” and not on the “personalities” of the current and past governors.
Their records differ
That Perry record, Texas politicos and academics agree, is very different from the 43rd president’s.
“Rick Perry has done a lot to distance himself from the big budgets and big deficits of the Bush presidency,” said Texas A&M political scientist George Edwards III. “He has taken a hard line on an activist federal government of the type that brought us No Child Left Behind (education reform) and prescription drug coverage under Medicare” during the Bush years.
“He is no compassionate conservative.....”<<<<

I saw the Toy Story "short" before the "Cars2" movie -- starring Ken and Barbie and all the toys. It was the only part of that movie going experience with my 3 year old grandson that entertained. Cars2 was a James Bond - Grand Prix meets Global Warming/clean energy villains. Just awful.
Excellent attitude!
This is funny. I think I’ll post this NRO article. Imagine how much material Obama has given Rick Perry!
>>>>Perry also won his election the old-fashioned way, outspending his opponent by about $400,000. And many of Perrys attacks on Hightower hit less on his agricultural incompetence and more on his unabashed liberalism (especially his endorsement of Jesse Jackson for president in 1988). Perry took the personality contest to such an extreme that when Hightower cut his finger in a lawnmower accident a few days before the election, Perry told reporters the event showed Hightowers total lack of common sense.<<<

I believe the most dangerous thing Barack Obama and his minions have done to our country is drive wedges between us. The people loved Ronald Reagan because he loved America and Americans. Rick Perry has the same appeal and the country is hungry for it.
SacBee: “Romney not seeing the love or cash this time”
>>>> Billionaire Southern California developer Ed Roski, a Romney man four years ago, also remains on the sidelines, at least for now.
Sacramento consultant Rob Stutzman, a top GOP operative who was part of Romney’s effort in 2007 and 2008, hasn’t re-enlisted. Nor has Orange County GOP chairman Scott Baugh, who was key to Romney’s finance operation four years ago. Baugh isn’t endorsing anyone for now.
Former California Republican Party chairman Michael Schroeder was Romney’s California political director in 2007. This year, he is leaning toward Perry, though Perry is not expected to decide whether to enter the race until August.
“Donors and volunteers need to have a reason to get involved. You have to have someone who grabs your imagination, and there isn’t anyone yet,” Schroeder said.
Republicans are forever looking for their next Ronald Reagan. Assemblyman Dan Logue, R-Chico, believes that candidate will be Perry, and circulated the letter signed by 19 legislators, including Harkey, encouraging the Texan to run for president.
Perry is playing heavily to evangelical Christians, which could help in a GOP primary but not in a general election. The safe bet is that Romney will end up with the nomination. But for now, Republicans in his sometimes home state of California are having second thoughts that he is the one.<<<<

>>>>Potential candidate meets Valley GOP leaders — Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is mulling the possibility of seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, was in and out of a Fresno meeting Wednesday afternoon in one hour.
But that was long enough to leave several invited business, political and agricultural leaders impressed.
“He was real competent, clear,” said former Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson. “He spoke 40 minutes extemporaneously, and he hit all the hot-button issues.”
Wednesday’s event which was hosted by local businessman Richard Spencer and former Assembly Member Mike Villines was held at Spencer’s office at Harris Construction.
It was closed to the media, and Perry’s only public display was to roll down his window and wave to the television cameras as he left the event.......
What Andreas Borgeas, Brand’s fellow Fresno City Council member, liked best was that Perry took the time to visit Fresno this early in the campaign. No other Republican candidate has bothered to do that, he said.<<<

I’m trying to “save paper” by posting snippets of all the article covering Rick Perry as attachments.

>>>>AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Should Rick Perry conclude that voter discontent has left him an opening to enter the presidential race, the longtime Texas governor would be among the GOP field’s most conservative candidates.
Primary voters would get a skilled politician with TV anchorman looks, a Southern preacher’s oratory and a cowboy’s swagger, matched by a disarming candor and sense of humor. The former cotton farmer from the village of Paint Creek in West Texas has never lost an election in nearly three decades as a politician.
What they wouldn’t get is a candidate whose politics are positioned to unite a Republican electorate that stretches from moderate pro-business fiscal conservatives to evangelical social conservatives, with the tea party falling somewhere along the spectrum.
“Texans, God love them, have that bigger-than-life persona about politics and that doesn’t necessarily play everywhere,” said Christopher Nicholas, a Republican political consultant who has worked extensively in the Northeast and Midwest. “I haven’t heard a lot of Republicans call Social Security a disease.”
Perry has. He branded Social Security and other New Deal programs “the second big step in the march of socialism,” according to a book published last year. The “first step” was a national income tax, which he has said stands alongside the direct election of U.S. senators as a major mistake among the amendments to the U.S. Constitution........<<<<

A legislative aide to Sen. John Tower (R.), McClure was leaning on a door when a rancher from Paint Creek, Texas, named Rick Perry walked past. Newly retired from the Air Force, Perry held a degree in animal science from Texas A&M. His class ring gave him away.
Spotting the ring, McClure, a fellow Texas A&M grad, introduced himself, and the two hit it off. Thirteen years later McClure, a notary public, would swear Perry into office as Texass agriculture commissioner, his first statewide office.

And as for Perrys retail skills, Luce says theyre Grade A. Rick campaigned in all 256 counties in the state, he says. He went to rural and urban areas; he did small and big events. Rick is a campaigner.
Perry may be a latecomer to the Iowa race, but he is an old hand at face-to-face politics. This former Texas agriculture commissioner knows a thing or two about grass roots. <<<
>>>......Among Republicans in the contest, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leads the money race and reported an $18.4 million haul in the second quarter. President Barack Obama’s campaign aides have told donors privately that they hope to meet or go beyond the $750 million the campaign raised in 2008.
When it comes to financing a presidential campaign “it’s a numbers game,” said investor Michael Fourticq Sr., managing partner at Hancock Park Associates, one of the hosts of the meeting with the Texas governor.
For Perry, “I think the money is there,” Fourticq said.
Perry is on a two-day swing through California, where he planned a string of private meetings. It was his third trip to the nation’s most populous state since June 12.
He declined to answer questions as he rushed into a hotel conference room, saying “I’m late already.” When he left the hotel he avoided the main entrance, where a reporter and photographer were waiting.....<<<<
