First Lady Announces Plan to Bring Fresh Produce to Poor Areas

U.S. first lady Michelle Obama has announced a plan for retailers to bring fresh fruit and vegetables to poor and underserved communities, as part of her effort to increase access to healthy foods and combat childhood obesity.

At the White House Wednesday, Mrs. Obama said studies show that people who have greater access to supermarkets and fresh fruits have lower instances of obesity.

The plan will see Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, and drugstore giant Walgreens, opening 1,500 stores, along with other regional retailers, in areas across the country where people have little or no access to fresh produce.

The White House says 24 million Americans live in these areas, which are often referred to as “food deserts.”

Mrs. Obama said no child should be consigned to a life of poor health because of the neighborhood they live in.

If she brought frozen produce she could bring twice as much for the same cost and it would be just as healthy. Oh wait, it wouldn’t be as touchy-feely, hippy-liberal, symbolic a “fresh” vegetables.

Stop SHOPLIFTING!

Grocery stores go where they can make money. They leave neighborhoods where the theft exceeds profits.

This sounds like taxpayers will have to subsidize major retailers to open stores in unprofitable areas. In effect, tax-money will be used to cover profit-loss.

If they quit driving stores out of business through theft maybe they’d have had access to fresh produce all this time. What an idiot Moochelle is. Teach your inhabitants of the ‘food deserts’ to quit breaking the law first or it won’t help to move stores in there.

IIRC, the “food desert” idea was debunked.

Fresh produce in the hood? What for? So it can rot on the shelves?

Why don’t Walmart and Walgreen’s already have stores in those areas - they would if they were profitable - right?

Vote buying? The Obamas already have those votes. I think it's a well-intentioned idea. There are a lot of places where there aren't good stores; the Wal-Mart in the town next to me is filled with D.C. shoppers who can't get decent groceries in the town.

However, the First Lady is ignoring the market-driven solutions... encourage the sales of fresh produce by not taxing and regulating stores to death in the cities.
