Duncan Hunter: Reagan 'Would Never Be Elected Today' Because He's A 'Moderate/Former Liberal'(Video)
Little Green Footballs ^ | July 5th | Duncan Hunter (VIDEO)

Posted on 07/20/2011 6:23:17 PM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

(WARNING: The video on LGF goes to Soros Funded Think Progress. I didn't know why LGF linked to them at first, but I can't find the video anywhere else.)

HUNTER: This is it folks. This is it. There is nothing after 2012. [...] I don’t care if it’s a more moderate/former liberal like Ronald Reagan, who would never be elected today in my opinion. If it’s someone like him or a hardcore conservative, you gotta elect the most winnable person this time. I know it sounds bad, but Congress makes the law. You’ve got a conservative Congress. You’re one third there. [...] You gotta vote and get behind an electable person for president. I know after what I said, me saying that doesn’t go hand in hand. Obama's going to raise a billion dollars. He's going to hold on to this thing, the communists in this country, the community organizers in this country, are going to hang on for dear life. This is it for them. If they can change the balance of the scale of this country, they will affect it until our downfall.

If Duncan Hunter Jr. thinks Reagan wouldn't be elected today he truly is a resident in the state of nuts and fruits. All Reagan would have to do is stand behind the podium, tilt his head a little, look in the camera and say, “Government is not the solution to our problem. Government IS the problem.” At that point he would have the audience in his hand and he would lay out a vision for the future and remind the audience that this, this, this, and this was promised by the Tax and Spend Liberals and all that happened was a waste of money when this and this should have been done and everyone would have been better off. Even if Reagan the man would not be electable, conservatism, like abstinence, works every time. Plus the last election says the message of conservatism (Stop spending. I am Taxed Enough Already) has been embraced nation wide and if the debt deal does not stop the bleeding, I see an even more active TEA party that cares nothing for party labels as long as the candidate makes the pledge to not increase spending and balance the budget no matter how much short term pain we must endure for long time gain. It's called delayed gratification; a concept ignored by most everyone born since 1980 who thinks the world owes them every thing and they want it now.

Wrong Duncan Hunter. This is Congressman Duncan Duane Hunter, not his father, former Congressman Duncan Lee Hunter.

Yeah, or Dole. I’m sure glad we went with the liberal that could win instead of someone that would be a positive change in the case of a miracle.

.. and she may indeed run. who knows? But thus far there is scant evidence of it. My comment is that I doubt Hunter was taking a swipe at Palin.

It’s just the Reagan/revisionism part.

>>> the Reagan election was a long time ago, it has nothing to do with the situation today.

The ignorance of the Hundred Percenters is eternal. Compromise one jot and you’re a traitor, a RINO! Even if it gets you what you need.

Reagan back then fought these same sorts battles as are fought today, and won most of them by deal-making that would lead to howls in the supersonic range here now. The only revisionism is pretending he didn’t.

“The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally — not a 20 percent traitor.” RR - 1972

So only the Obama types can be elected?

That is just a stupid statement. Maybe you and pissant need to get a room.

I’m just tired of people who think they can invoke Reagan’s name and we stop thinking for ourselves and do what we’re told.

The “conventional wisdom” house of cards is collapsing.

Reagan was a conservative in a nation totally run by liberals, the Congress, the Senate, the media, the states, the cities, radio, all print, everything was run by the left.

My guess is that today Reagan would be much more conservative and able to accomplish more, and compromise less.

I agree...I don’t see a swipe at governor Palin either.
If Perry gets in, and Palin gets in, that will result in a coronation of Romney.

To properly evaluate Reagan, you have to know enough about his time. At that time there were no media sources beyond liberals. No cable. Talk radio was not widespread when Reagan came along. As a result, liberals controlled everything most of the public heard. Reagan was radical in challenging the status quo of his time. It was the first time most Americans ever considered an alternative to the Rino GOP and the Liberal Democrats in power. Conservatives were demonized and the public knew no better. Conservative reform ideas caused hysteria.

When he authorized amnesty, he planned for the border to be closed from then on and for sane and responsible immigration to be implemented in the US. There were not so many illegals at that time like there is now. He did not know the Dems and Reps would betray the people even worse in coming decades. He was not for open borders.

Tax increases were automatic at that time and anyone who had money was named “rich.” People devoid of history don’t realize what a big deal it was for Reagan to cut the “rich” people’s tax brackets. Liberals had a class warfare cow and they did - at that time - launch black race riots when anyone challenged the status quo. He challenged the Left reverse discrimination and hate whitey moves with good humor, hinting at what many Americans thought by had never read or heard of television before. He challenged the nature of welfare and the suffering of Black population stuck in huge cement poverty reservations in the cities with handouts and no opportunity.

You can not compare Reagan to today’s political and social enviornment. Today, Reagan would have a totally different agenda if he were around, and he would have had a major influence on the GOP and the conservative movement if he in the decades after his retirement like the other presidents have had. He was not as liberal as Nancy and her screwy kids but he was not a born again Christian either (he was prolife which was a huge deal. Most Americans had not heard the pro life argument outside of church before that. It was shocking and limo liberals hated him like they hate Palin.)

We did not have a free press when Reagan came along. We labored under the “Fairness Doctrine” which gave liberals the ability to knock anyone off the air they went after. Reagan got rid of that and gave America a free press. Then he busted the Unions who had total control over the US and Americans knew no different...

"Reagan back then fought these same sorts battles as are fought today, and won most of them by deal-making that would lead to howls in the supersonic range here now. The only revisionism is pretending he didn’t."

That was a long time ago. Reagan had way different realities to deal with. Both houses were stacked heavily against him. I don't think the pubbies had had a majority in either house since the Nixon Administration.

Federal debt was consuming about 1% of revenue, not 10%.

There were an estimated 3 million illegal aliens in the country, and most of them worked in agriculture. Now there are 15-20 million, even though we have half the number of ag jobs, and most of them are receiving public assistance.

Reagan had room to maneuver that just doesn't exist anymore, and had to tread lightly with congressional dems because they ran the show 100% on things like budgets and confirmation hearings.
