Really surprised me that VA went to 70 mph considering they are one of the most anti-car states with the detector ban, strict inspections and reckless driving tickets for minor violations.
Kind of interesting that Maine is going to 75 mph and a stretch of I-49 in LA is 75 as well. I wonder when the 85 mph signs will show in TX.
Concerning these accidents, these nanny statist will push for bringing back the much hated 55 mph speed limit.
Utah has 80 mph on a couple stretches of I-15.
Yeah, I got a Reckless for doing 80 on a 65. 80 mph is reckless in VA no matter what the spped limit or road conditions. Reckless is also a misdemeanor than can result in jail time. I had to hire a lawyer, take a day off of work, drive to Fredricksburg, take initiative to take a safe driver class, and incur the stress of possibly losing my job (requires a security clearance) over speeding just so the judge could reduce the charge to simple speeding at 79 mph. What a waste of time, money, and energy that was.
A bud of mine told me there was an old Popular Mechanics article still floating around which told you how to build an inexpensive device which fried radar guns aimed at you.
I'd love to try it out in Virginia sometime.
The signs may not say so, but from my time in TX that was pretty close to par. Reminded me of the DC beltway in that a wreck was about the only way to make a cop visible.
As for Maine, on several trips in the mid/upper part of the state I went an hour or more at a time without seeing another car on my side, and very very few on the other. 'Course, the most effective speed deterrent up there for anyone with half a brain is spelled 1,000 lbs of moose.
