President Obama joined Democratic and Republican senators Tuesday in offering support for a $3.7 trillion deficit-reduction plan announced Tuesday morning by the five remaining members of the Gang of Six.
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who pulled out of the Gang of Six in May, also rejoined the group and praised the plan as something that could win the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate.
The plan has moved significantly, and its where we need to be and its a start, Coburn said. This doesnt solve our problems, but it creates the way forward where we can solve our problems.

According to an executive summary, the Gang of Six plan would stabilize the debt by 2014 and reduce publicly held debt to 70 percent of gross domestic product by 2021.
It would involve two separate bills, one implementing $500 billion in immediate deficit cuts and another implementing larger reforms. Conrad said that he has held off marking up a budget in committee to use the normal budget process to move the Gang of Six plan.
On entitlements, the plan would fully pay for the Medicare doc fix over 10 years, allowing doctors to avoid a drastic cut in Medicare payments under the law which is regularly avoided but never paid for.

No, I do believe there is $500B cut in the first year...
Every time a good GOP goes native, I am sure they are being compromised for a reason. They must have something on Coburn. If you stand by your principles, you are outed ala John Ensign. If you promise to cave and go along with the Dems ala Arnold in CA they let you skate until out of office.
Yes and the only cutbacks that matter are the ones that will take place between now and 2012. Anything else can be ignored by the next Congress.
But at the same time tax rates are decreased...top rate by 10%.
According to the article a mere $500 billion which means they will still have over a 1 trillion dollar deficit for this year alone. Notice how all the RINOs are lining up behind it?
Coburn NEVER had any principles, we just thought he did.
The Republicans, proving yet again that we are the STUPID and NAIVE Party. Arrrrgggghhhh!

Here you go...
Like most state legislatures, the regular Texas legislative session is limited to 140 calendar days, starting in January of odd years.
The need for such a limitation on the federal legislature is increasingly obvious.
If Congress met for just six months every other year, the opportunities for incessant meddling would be minimized.
If Congress met for just six months every other year, our legislators would not require permanent residences in the Washington metro. They would not become part of the "Washington Ruling Class". Instead they would still live among their constituents -- and be their representative rather than their ruler.
If their pay and their perks stopped after six months, they would learn how to work and get the necessary things done, rather than over-complicate and muddle up every legislative act.
If their pay and their perks stopped after six months, they'd spend 18 months away from its pernicious influences -- K Street, the Washington press corps, professional staff, cocktail parties, old pols like John McCain, Mitch McConnell, Chuckie Schumer, Dickie Durbin et al.
The Gang of Six is a bunch of crapola. Our Democrat disguised as a Republican Ssxby Chambliss is part of this and he never saw a Liberal POS legislation he didn’t like. Part of this debacle is going to be getting rid of the interest deduction on your home mortgage. Probably the only deduction lots of folks have. That is a tax increase folks. Every conservative talk show in Atlanta is talking about trying to recall old Saxby right now. He is the worst mistake GA Republicans ever made at the polls. We are going to rid ourselves him in the near future.
The entire discussion is a fraud. It’s not just the ridiculous 10 year projections of growth and future budgets, it’s the fact that even the most ambitious of the Republican proposals would still require the country to pile up trilliions more in debt before they get anywhere near a balanced budget for a single year. They are not talking about cutting $2 trillion, $4 trillion or even $9 trillion off the actual accumulated debt - they are talking about reductions of the anticipated growth in that debt over the next ten years. Obama planned to run up another $12 trillion in debt over the next ten years. Cutting that growth by $4 bilion would still leave the US with an increase in the Net Debt from $12 billion to $20 billion. Almost every politician in Washington is lying to the American people about what this really means - even the Tea Party caucus.
Sorry, it’s already $14 Trillion.
I see the usual morons blow smoke, BS and pontificate, before doing a simple search for facts.

Dr. Coburn Releases $9 Trillion Deficit Reduction Plan
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today released a new report Back in Black that outlines how the federal government can reduce the deficit by $9 trillion over the next ten years and balance the federal budget. The 614-page plan was the result of a thorough and exhaustive review of thousands of federal programs.
The American people are tired of Washington waiting until the last minute to avoid a crisis, particularly when it is a crisis Washington itself created. The crisis, though, is not the debt limit deadline. The crisis is Congress refusal to make hard choices and reduce a debt that has become our greatest national security threat. The plan I am offering today gives Washington 9 trillion reasons to stop making excuses and start solving the problem, Dr. Coburn said.
Both parties will no doubt criticize portions of this plan and I welcome that debate. My goal is not to replace the work of the budget committees but to show the American people what is possible and necessary. What is not acceptable, however, is not having a plan and delaying reform until some perfect political moment that will never arrive. The fact is doing nothing is a tax increase, a benefit cut for seniors and the poor, and a betrayal of the core values both parties hold dear, Dr. Coburn said.
Dr. Coburns full report is here. A section by section outline of the report is here. A summary of savings is here. Highlights of the report here.
Additionally, Dr. Coburn released the following report exposing wasteful government spending in Oklahoma. Full report here.
They’re cutting $500B from the deficit not the debt.
To cut the debt by that much would mean having a surplus of $500B this year, good luck with that.
Has anybody read it , or do we have to pass it to know what is in it.
