Mark Steyn-- British cell phones easy to hack with 0000 and 1234 as their default pin codes

Mark Steyn is substituting for Rush Limbaugh. He just said British cell phones come with 0000 and 1234 as pre-set pin codes. You have to change this for better security. Steyn just said Hugh Gran's phone was left on the preset of 0000 and Prince Andrew's to 1234.

From a UK website: Since most phones come with a preset pin code that is easy to grasp such as 1234 or 0000, mobile phone users are advised to change these settings to unique numbers that won’t prove a security threat with time. While celebrities and politicians could be at the highest risk, those of us who use a wide range of encrypted mobile services such as money transfer should take measures to prevent being hurt in future.

None of this is to excuse the behaviour of the hackers at the NoW and their enablers. But it’s an open secret that phone hacking is rife among British tabloids, and the Guardian and BBC axis have chosen to play down this fact in their single-minded pursuit of Murdoch and the NoW. Those other tabloids have been happy to play along, although with at least one and perhaps more public inquires on the way, they may yet  regret helping to open this particular can of worms.

Few will mourn the passing of the NoW beyond its loyal band of sleaze-addicted readers. But at the same time, the manner in which a left-wing newspaper has been able to collude with the state-funded broadcaster to  lead an attack an organization whose power and political alignment they resented should be deeply troubling.

So all they had to know was the phone number of the phone in question, then punch in the default code.

Dang! It is alarming to think of all the people who don’t bother to change the setting.

It should be quite obvious to us at least that this is a politically-inspired dogpile-on-Rupert. Impossible that this was just News of the World doing this. I sincerely hope this blows back on the other tabloids gleefully joining in.

It should be damn well obvious to us that even now, the Soros crowd is even now huddling up the street from the White House at Caribou Coffee or the presidential McDonalds (so as to avoid the visitor’s log) brainstorming with the Obamites on a strategy to expand this dog and pony show to our shores to find some hook in all this that they can use to deny FNC’s broadcast renewal.

Make no mistake, they’re going to do their damndest to use this any way they can to bring down Fox News.

At the very least, this is one more thing they can use to distract us peasants from Gunwalker.

Every phone I’ve had in America has the same default code of 1234. The story is dumb

Guess what...anything, anywhere, with a default password is pretty easy to get into if you don’t change it.

Yes the lefties are piling on Murdoch trying to take down right wing Fox News in America and his right wing media empire in the UK.

Hacking? I objected to the term 'hacking' being used in connection with this scandal before I knew anything about it because lazy journalists would misapply this term before they could ever use it correctly . . . and I was right. So, unethical journalists (but I repeat myself) listened to the voice-mail messages of stupid people.

What is the law regarding entering a house with the door open, or maybe better, with the keys in the lock? Seems like an invitation.

Today I believe there are three options as the phone is shipped.

1. 0000
2. 1234
3. Last four digits of phone number.

It is no harder today then before if you don’t change your password.

If people set their voicemail to bypass the code check by using caller Id anyone with a spooffed caller id can get in. I have mine set to download than delete from the dial in service. If someone hacks in they will find nothing as long as my phone is on the network. If they get my phone they still need the unlock code for it.

Darn cell phone.

Notice how much time Obama spends golfing? People he golfs with do not show up on any visitors log, and any discussions on the golf course are not recorded on the White House audio system.

As someone who often keeps my door fully opened and who used fully opened 3 foot square windows with no screens, on a well traveled alley, I always assumed the law is that you cannot enter the house, whether the door is closed or locked is meaningless.

You do not need to lock your doors to make your house private property.

1-2-3-4-5? That’s the stupidest combination I’ve ever heard of in my life! That’s the kinda thing an idiot would have on his luggage!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5? That’s amazing! I’ve got the same combination on my luggage! [Sandurz and Helmet look at each other in horror]
