Hainan Island:
That’s where the US EP-3 was forced down after a mid-air with a Chinese fighter about 10 years ago. The USN was interested in the island cuz it’s been hollowed-out a bit for a huge and well-protected offshore submarine base.
Some say the Chinese have plans for 20 submarines to be based there inside that island.
The Chinese want oil, they want their sea-lanes protected, and they want the USN out of the West Pacific.

Plans? they have already launched 3 or more of the new 094s and are building more.

The US shouldn’t bother too much about China and the South China sea. Asia is not Latin America. Asia cannot be dominated by a hegemon the way the US dominated the Western hemisphere.
Right next to China is a wary Russia and a very wary Japan. South Korea is no slouch either and India can match China man for man. To this we add Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and Vietnam.
China is outnumbered here - easily.
China has been very stupid about the way it goes about relating with other Asian nations. And it’s stupid actions are further isolating it.
China wants to create the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, just with them in charge, instead of the Japanese.
