New York (CNN) -- We were at a Manhattan water park when it happened. I was with my then 3-year-old daughter, Luna, playing in a sandpit on a foul, chilly morning beneath clouds that looked like ripped paper. It was no day to be outside, but living in a city of small apartments, it was no day to be inside with a child either.
A little girl approached the two of us, clearly interested in playing. But when she arrived, she addressed only Luna. Pointing a finger at me, she asked her, "Is that your baby sitter?"
I've been mistaken for baby sitters all my life, or waitresses, sales clerks, even the occasional cleaning lady -- but it's a whole new experience to have it happen in front of my child.
It's not that there are no Latinos in Manhattan who wouldn't upset the stereotypes. There are just too few of us in the upper middle class universe where I live who aren't, well, baby-sitting or selling things. I get where this idea originated. I even understand why little kids are so frank.

Manhattan water park....????, only water park I ever knew in Manhattan was a 5-way hydrant
I don’t dare read the whole story. I’m sure I would have to break down and cry over such a horrible trajedy.
When I pick my kids up from school the other students say to mine, “Your grandmother’s here to get you!”
My guess is Dad's a turkey baster.
When she stops thinking of herself as a latina and starts thinking of herself as an American she will realize this kind of commentary is less than worthless.
Mom looks like a real barrel of laughs to be around....
Sounds like BS to me. My experience has always been that kids don’t see color when they are younger.
Very painful read by the way. I wasted too much time on it.
The girl is adorable, and we'll pray for the both of them.
When I read the headline and first couple of lines of the story, I assumed the little girl asked because probably 90% of the kids there are with their nannies/babysitters and not their mothers.
If she plays her cards right, she could grow up to become a wise latina on the supreme court.

She finished a stint as a producer at CBS News in New York before joining CNN.
Arce has been a board director for both the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. She is an adjunct professor who teaches reporting on immigration, race and urban issues at the graduate school of journalism of the City University of

Homosexuality Is Not a Civil Right
In addition, homosexuals enjoy support from every major news organization, whose coverage long ago crossed the line into outright advocacy of homosexual causes. More than six hundred journalists attended a conference of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association in September 2000. Homosexuals and their allies such as CNN producer Rose Arce and NBC Nightly News producer Barbara Raab hold influential media positions.
I love freepers.
What exactly is the point of this story? Does she feel discriminated against because a little child thought she was her daughter’s babysitter? Does she feel slighted because she’s a proud ethnic liberal mother, and only someone prejudiced would think otherwise?
Where’s “Mr. Arce”? Maybe it’s Rose him/herself, look at her FB page:

Yeah, let’s pray for the little girl.
Beats being taken for your child’s grandmother, sweetie ;-).
All my hispanic friends take care of their own children (and sometimes grandchildren). I guess we’re not in the upper class universe.
Yep, strictly staring at her own navel.
Does she have a life partner? Has the daughter EVER gotten to meet the daddy/sperm donor?
Well homosexuals are known to service one another in anonymous public restroom trysts.
