Everything was going well last night for MS House candidate Cindy Shivers Bryan at the New Hebron Activity Club Political Forum. And then things got better.
Bryan faced off with her Republican primary opponent, Jimmy Barton, and Democrat Bob Evans. Each gave a speech to a packed house, followed by a Q&A session and a meet and greet. Bryans message was clear: the politicians in Jackson are disconnected from their constituents and instead are dedicated to big government and self-aggrandizement, all at the cost of providing more jobs and better education for Mississippi.
While Bartons speech was dry and otherwise unremarkable, Evans performance confused and alienated the audience. Evans described himself as a New Deal Democrat and, in a clumsy attempt to win over the hearts of the audience in the wake of the Casey Anthony trial, spoke about his push for a Caylees Law in Mississippi.
Evans barely talked about District 91.
Evans further marginalized the crowd during the Q&A, when a local business-owner asked Evans why she had never once seen him. Evans quipped that he had never seen her either. If that was a joke, it was lost on everyone.
He tried to say that he cares for our state, said Bryan, but then he belittled the audience. Several times he acted like the people he represents were somehow inconveniencing him or not good enough for him. Tonight proved that the people of Mississippi deserve much better.
