The news and blogosphere is filled with responses to the July 14, 2011 story by Joshua Green, the Senior Editor of the Atlantic, entitled "Michele Bachmann's Church Says the Pope Is the Antichrist." That is because it raises a serious matter which should not be taken lightly, and one which the candidate must address. First, let me share some personal context. I am what is often called a "revert" to the Catholic Church, someone who returned to the Church of my childhood after a long search for the truth. I love being a Catholic Christian. I hold an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in Catholic theology. I am a dissertation away from obtaining a PhD in Catholic Moral Theology. I am also a member of the Clergy, a Deacon. However, I write this article as a private and very concerned citizen.

I suppose that Saint Joseph, son of Jacob/Isreal wasn't qualified to be the Pharoh's chief of staff and chief executive administrator because he held strict and narrow religious beliefs...
Let's see... Romney can't be a conservative because he is mormon and same for Huntsman. Kennedy couldn't be POTUS because he was an agent of the Pope, right? What are people like this lawyer/deCON looking for? Special dispensation for their denomination if their favorite candidate achieve political victory???
This stuff just ain't right!!! By the way I didn't vote for Kennedy and I'm not voting for either of the two Mormons either, but not for any cockamaymie religious reasons!!!
That’s right—try to stifle all opposition to your little bigoted Tea Party Queen.
She ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
Wait until Sarah gets in the race.
Except as a percentage of faithful in the respective churches, the thus-bigoted segment is a lot smaller in the evangelical set.
I too am Catholic and could care less about this phony issue.
I grew up as a baptist and understand there is a certain amount of suspicion from some evangelical Christians towards the Catholic church. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t vote for an evangelical Christian unless that individual expressed hostility towards the church. I see no evidence of that from MB.
Even in the officially anti-Catholic church of my youth it was very rarely even mentioned, except for dire warnings from parents not to date Catholic girls. :-). So this to me is very exagerated in importance.
This seems to me a leftist ploy to get us fighting amongst ourselves.
It does rather look a little convenient to dump over the sect of the Lutheran Church who is so anti-Catholic just in time for the elections, presumably with the self-serving hope for more of the Catholic votes, or to dodge the hypocrisy.
Protestants, however, often don’t even follow the Catholic Church and the ignorance keeps them incurious of what all the hoopla is about. But that is a little different from the old “mainline” churches like Bachman’s, however, who owe their original existence entirely to being anti-Catholic. Remember, Luther started out with reform of the fallen individuals doing evil and steering the Church here and there, but got instead a permanent schism wherein others followed behind him who actually dumped the faith, forcing Luther who kept his own devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, to say, “ I have created now many popes”.
Bachman will need to address this business of anti-Christ labeling and name calling, because even some protestants are turned off by such unnecessary, self righteous tenants especially in an era where Christians would be wiser to stick together, given common threats from Islam.
” . . . this is something that Bachmann has to answer for.”
Yes, probably. But I’m wondering what protestant sect, regardless of size or vehemence, DOESN’T have problems with the Pope. And btw, Pat Robertson also believed the pope was toxic; he spent half an hour on the 700-Club explaining why. I don’t remember Catholics making a fuss when he ran. But, of course, his odds of making it to the nomination were probably not as high as Bachmann’s appear at the moment.
Bachmann will as rightfully point out as I that loudmouths like you are big on accusation, tiny to nonexistent on proof.
“I am a Catholic and a supporter. Just dont believe there is a bigoted bone in her body.”
Good for you. Glad you have faith in her. a lot of us, like Bill Donohue of the Catholic League want to hear her explain it. The clock is ticking....
Bachmann stopped attending that anti-Catholic Church two years ago, so she clearly didn't do it with the prez bid in mind. Thats good enough for me.
Yes sir, I will not vote for anyone that is not totally pure. I would rather let Obama win............../sarc.
To one degree or another, isn’t every Protestant church at least a little anti-Catholic? Would they just be Catholics if they weren’t?
“Bachmann stopped attending that anti-Catholic Church two years ago, so she clearly didn’t do it with the prez bid in mind”
NO. She resigned from that Church days before she announced.
So then how do you feel about the Catholic church’s teaching no one can be saved outside the Catholic church?
So what if she believes the Pope is the Antichrist? I used to think it was my middle kid until he got older! That is reeeeeally funny. Now on to read the rest of the commentary ...
It appears that Michele Bachman has her own version of Jeremiah Wright. Note that this article didn’t come from a leftist publication. If she wins the nomination, this could be a big problem.
It would be because of their bigotry that Catholics would suddenly Perot Mr. Obama into another four years, cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Then they will lament all the things that would never have happened under the watch of that “bastard Lutheran.”
“Are you comparing the white-hating, America-hating Marxist to Bachmann??????????”
That WAS a bit over the top.
The writer fails to understand the relevance of the Rev. Wrong relationship. Obama dedicated a book, praised the guy. And forget the petty Christian denominational squabbles, this jackass hated AMERICA!
Let's call a truce and get on with defeating Obama and not stand here in a circular firing squad.
Yes, but she stopped attending two years ago.
“This might matter to me,,, if i wasnt treated to a continous stream of Roman catholic threads that are very disrespectful of protestants.”
