US Senators with the type of seniority McCain has are very powerful people in our society, far more than portrayed. Better to have such a force as an ally than a foe.

McCain was going to win reelection regardless. If he had lost, quite probable that Hayworth would have lost the General. As I recall, Hayworth himself was far from the perfect candidate.
