Did Marcus Bachmann Really Refer to Gays as “Barbarians”?

irst things first: the clip that liberal blogs have been pushing was not doctored in any way, as apparently has been claimed. You can find the whole thing here starting just after the 50:00 mark, and here is the relevant excerpt:

Bachmann: Well, certainly. There’s that curiosity. But again, we, like you know, it is as if we have to understand: barbarians need to be educated. They need to be disciplined. And just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn’t mean that we’re supposed to go down that road.

It's clear that Mr. Bachmann was talking about children as barbarians -- not homosexuals. See transcript below.

It is common to hear children called little barbarians. I've done so myself. It is an apt analogy!

Most parents know that children, if undisciplined by the civilizing influence of traditional parents, will behave like the barbaric characters in William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

Host: This has been swirling around lately because of this particular letter that came down from the American College of Pediatricians cautioning schools to stop promoting homosexual identity to children. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal came out with an article, “what do you say when your teenager says she’s gay? What do you say to Christian parents who come up with this?
Bachmann: Well, I think you clearly say, what is the understanding of God’s Word on homosexuality. And I think that, this is no mystery that a child or pre-adolescent, particularly adolescents, will question and wonder about sexuality. That’s nothing new under the sun from the beginning of time. But I don’t think we should take that as, because we wonder, or we think, or we question, does that take us down the road of homosexuality?
Host: Could you add the word “experiment” to that?
Bachmann: Well, certainly. There’s that curiosity. But again, we, like you know, it is as if we have to understand: barbarians need to be educated. They need to be disciplined. And just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn’t mean that we’re supposed to go down that road. That’s what’s called a sinful nature. And we have a responsibility as parents and as authority figures not to encourage such thoughts and feelings to move into the action steps. And let’s face it, what’s our culture, what’s our public school system doing today? They are giving full, wide open doors to children, not only giving them encouragement to think it, but to actually encourage action steps.
That’s why when we understand what truly is the percentage of homosexuals in this country, it’s small. But by these open doors I can see, and we are experiencing that it is starting to increase.

There is something sinister going on when US embassies around the world are holding Gay pride parties and the State Department helps Lady Gaga perform pro gay concert overseas.

This is not the government's role. I doubt they really care about individual gay people.

I thought he was making an analogy.

That was my impression also.
Granted I just skimmed the article (I usually just zip to the responses ... like now), but I thought he was just holding up educating barbarians as an analogy of how we need to educate people who don't know any better. Western society keeps denying the concept of sin, and media keeps projecting the idea that homosexuality is 'normal', and that it should be celebrated. This is teaching the people to become barbarians. No longer governed by God's laws, nor in reverent fear of His Name and presence.
I.e., society has become the person described in Psalm 14:1 'The fool has said in their heart that there is no God'...
I.e., we are brainwashed in the public schools and by the media to become fools and barbarians.
