Salon Exclusive: The Texas governor's uncomfortably close ties to groups that glorify the Lost Cause
[UPDATED BELOW]
Rick Perry made national headlines in 2009 when, during a speech to a Tea Party group, he floated the possibility that Texas could secede from the union. But the governor's substantive ties to the neo-Confederate movement may be deeper than previously known.
A 1998 voting guide published by a leading neo-Confederate group and obtained by Salon not only endorses Perry for lieutenant governor but also describes him as "a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans." Perry's office did not respond to a request for comment about the governor's possible membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
This is the document, published by the League of the South on its website DixieNet.org; it was unearthed by Edward Sebesta, a Texas-based independent researcher and co-editor of "Neo-Confederacy: A Critical Introduction." Click the image for larger size.
[BIG BIG BIG SNIP]
UPDATE 7/14/11: Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier issues this denial: "[T]he governor never joined that group nor has he ever paid any dues to it."
I've asked her if he has a position on the pending license plate issue, and if I hear back I will update this post.

I’m saying that if Ron Paul is there at the end, with a ton of delegates, it would be natural for Palin, at the top of the ticket, to take the #2 person.
Palin has already had the number 2 slot. She shouldn’t be a number 2 to Perry.
And I agree with you in general about what the democrats, or some of them, used to be.
The biggest change, politically, over this past generation, is that, for all practical purposes, the Republican party is now the Conservative party, and the democrats are the socialist party. To that end, you are right—we do not need Republicans In Name Only in our conservative party, because, well, they are not conservatives.
However, if there are conservatives remaining in the democrat party or more importantly if some in the democrat party or who support it have a change of faith, epiphany, call it what you will, and realize that the conservative mindset is correct—what the American experiment is all about, frankly; then I encourage them, welcome then, and applaud them.
We want and NEED them. Ours is an ideological struggle where, if we think our cause is right, we must prevail. People putting on their right thinking minds will find us, and we should give them refuge.
sure. you coulda found it yourself just by hitting “in forum” and looking at my posts. Most of the stuff you found is from today. I like Ron Paul and Sarah Palin. I’d vote for Bachmann before the rest of them because I think she’d be the better President than the rest of them, although I think she’d be creamed. And I really really really don’t like Perry.
But it’s a rare thread that I’ll jump on and participate. Just drop my truth down there.
Keep up the good work; it gives me time to get the grass cut.
I'm not blasting you. You would know it if I were.
I will know that from now on that any time you post a thread, it won't be for the purpose of information or grown up discussion, but it's to start another pissing contest with those that don't agree with you.
I don't stalk other FReepers.
Then you don't know my posting history or my temperament but it hasn't stopped you from stepping in and telling me how to behave on my own thread while being hounded by a troll.
You are hopeless. LOL I’m done with you.
I love to read Civil War stuff. I’m sure you’ve read The Killer Angels.
Hahahaha, I just came in from doing exactly that. It's HOT down here folks. Don't come to Texas. :-)
Your troll detector is busted...get a new one.
You "really" don't?
Don't take offense, I'm just havin' a little fun. (Maybe it's the hot Texas sun :-)
Are you talking about ME again? Wow! I'm moving up in the world.....from just an ordinary reader/responder on FR to a "minion".
(Do "minions" get paid? What exactly IS a "minion" :-)
But seriously, truthfreedom, why (to you) is every question a "challenge" and every questioner a "minion". Are you just naturally a hostile person?
And I guess if you’ve ever been a non-believer, you can never be a real Christian.
I think I made the point earlier that Democrat politicians are like the Made Men in the Mafia. They had to HURT a Republican to get that status.
You don't have to HURT anybody to become, for example, a Christian.
I think that's an enormous difference that should not be overlooked.
It’s fun on a web site like this to use hard-cast stereotypes — it makes you popular, and you don’t have to think.
But seriously? You think that every single politician has to win an election by lying about their opponent? That there are no honest disagreements, that there are no reasonable people who happen to come to the wrong conclusions, or who can figure out they made a mistake?
If Perry lied about a republican in order to win an election, post it. Don’t just make a blanket statement and expect people with brains to accept it without question, just because it fits the absurd stereotype.
I grew up in a highly democratic state, Maryland; everybody was a democrat, because that was where you won elections. There were very good men who were democrats, principled people that good conservatives like my father could support, over their liberal counterparts in the party.
I have no idea what kind of democrat Perry was; that’s a legitimate discussion to have. I’m not going to assume that because he was a democrat in the 80s, that he was evil.
BTW, Paul put Christians to death, and then he became one. I agree that politics and religion are different; but it is clearly the case that people who caused great physical and mental harm to Christians later were Christians, and even leaders.
Ronald Reagan was the president of a UNION. I’m sure that if you went into a random thread about unions, and said that anybody who worked their way up to the head of a union had to be a thug at some point, or as you said, like the “Made Men”, everybody would pat you on the back for your “insightful” comments.
Did I say anything about lying?
In Partisan Politics it is fair to deal in absolutes ~ as in, in this election, we will have Republicans and we will have Democrats. There may be some minor candidates and though they may be fine people, and probably absolutely correct ~ they are going to be losers.
We have quite enough of our own Republican politicians that we really don't need to borrow them from the Democrats anymore.
Years later, long after he was retired and actually declining, he and my grandmother foiled an armed robber and took away his gun ~ that's because he knew, and she knew what to do.
I even have a pen here that Roosevelt used to sign his first federal employee pay raise ~ YEARS LATER ~ Roosevelt didn't give raises you know!
Now, was he a thug? Well, he lived across the alley from John Dillinger's dad ~ Hmm?
What do you think?
Back in post 47, where this subthread started, you said:
They have their litmus tests ~ just like the Made Men of the Mafia. You want to run for office as a Democrat you have to lie about and brutalize a Republican candidate at least once.Yes, later you said "hurt", but you also said "lie" and "brutalize".
I would agree about "borrowing" democrats; however, when a guy has been a republican for 20+ years, and has a long record as a republican in office, it's not "borrowing a democrat" anymore.
