Is Rick Perry Running? ‘Absolutely,’ Says Texas Monthly Editor
July 15, 2011 1:56 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein (@rickklein) reports:

Look for another entry into the Republican field: Texas Gov. Rick Perry is poised to jump into the race for the presidency in the coming weeks, Texas Monthly senior executive editor Paul Burka told us on ABC’s “Top Line” today.

“Absolutely. He's running,” Burka said. “He's been talking about it with his family -- his family's behind him. His friends are behind him. And I really think this something that came -- that started in 2010 when he was running for reelection as governor. He's been thinking about this for a long time.”

Burka said Perry is eyeing an announcement around the time of his August 6 day of prayer event in Houston. That timing also closely coincides with the Ames Straw Poll the following weekend in Iowa.

Until then, Perry has put the pieces in place he’ll need to run – writing a book, delivering policy speeches, doing targeted national media appearances, and establishing an agenda in Texas “that mattered to Republican voters.”

“Instead of doing things that Texas government usually does, which is health care, law enforcement, schools, we dealt with these hot-button Republican issues during the session,” Burka said.

To prepare the national media for a Perry campaign, Burka has written a column – titled “Dear Yankee” – outlining some things out-of-town reporters should know about the longest-serving governmor in the nation.

“One of the important things to know is that Perry was a ‘yell leader’ at Texas A&M,” Burka told us. “What you will see when he comes out is, that this is very much a part of his persona. He knows how to fire up a crowd. The Republican field has been lacking in excitement -- we hear that time and again. Well, one way or another, Rick Perry is going to give them excitement.”

“He is ideologically consistent. He almost never varies from the position of strong conservative -- much more conservative than any other politician that I can think of that Texas has produced on a national scale. Much more so than George W. Bush, for example.”

Watch the “Top Line” interview with Paul Burka HERE.

Also today, we checked in with ABC’s Christiane Amanpour, the host of “This Week,” about President Obama’s attempt to take his case for the debt ceiling and addressing the deficit to the public. Watch that segment HERE.

And for our “Top Line” Top Tweet contest, we asked viewers to draw political conclusions from Democrats’ resounding 8-2 victory over Republicans at last night’s annual congressional baseball game.

Our winner was @adimike55, who has a new contest in mind for fans to enjoy at Nationals Park: “Forget the Big Head Presidents Races, Bring on the Big Head Politicians. (Will Teddy ever win?)”

Texas Monthly is our local version of Mother Jones but with expensive real estate and furniture ads. No surprise they are backing the RINO.

I still think he’s in. Then you can say goodbye to Timmy. I wish I could include Romney too but he has enough money to hang around. Bachmann it will all depend on what she does in IA. Will be interesting to see if Palin makes an announcement before Perry. If Perry’s smart he gets in now and doesn’t wait to see what Palin does.

They are not backing him.

They are digging for mud to throw at him this very minute.

The only person (and it’s one that doesn’t exist) that beats Obama right now is generic republican. The minute you tack on a name he beats them all (including Palin).

I know, as soon as I meet Generic, I will tell him/her to go for it.

Perry and Palin are playing a game of chicken to see who jumps in first. Bachmann is sitting back wondering which one is going to pick her for VP.

I am sticking with my big 3—Palin, Bachman, Cain...not necessarily in that order. However, if one of them breaks off into a third party, I stay with the Republican candidate (I voted for the midget twice...and assured Clinton a presidency.

Paul Burka is a leftest POS....I just got my Texas Monthly bill for extending my subscription as well as a couple of gift subscriptions. A couple of times a year they highlight the law firms of Texas...yada, yada, yada.... NO RENEWAL.. It’s a glossy masterpiece....with some acceptable journalism that has lowered their price to about 10 bucks a year to pad the base.... Based in the socialist cesspool of Texas in Austin I expect to see it cease in the next few years or change it’s leftest format.. IMHO

In every one of Perry’s re-elections he has been the douche running against the turd sandwich. He will not jump in before seeing what Palin does. Why not? Because if he had to run against Palin it would be work. If she does not come in and he gets the nomination then the race is right up his alley. I’d prefer Perry to Obama but would prefer that we not have another RINO. Perry is a RINO and way to easy to buy. Ask Houston home builder Bob Perry about that....

Asking Burka whether Perry is running is like asking Joe McGinnis whether Palin is running. They lose a lot personally if the answer is “no”.

Perry’s vaccination order still stoking fires

AUSTIN — Blowback continued at the Capitol on Wednesday over Gov. Rick Perry’s order mandating
that schoolgirls be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease linked to cervical cancer.

Critics rip Perry’s vaccine mandate
Governor rejects opponents’ calls to reverse order

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry stood firm Monday against a political firestorm generated by his
order that sixth-grade girls be inoculated against a sexually transmitted virus linked to cervical cancer.

Social conservatives from Texas to Washington called on Perry to reverse his order making
Texas the first state to require the vaccine, saying the mandate makes sex seem permissible
and that parents should be the ones to decide whether to immunize their daughters.
And several Texas lawmakers expressed outrage at Perry for circumventing the legislative process.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/26/us/26texas.html

The vaccine, Gardasil, is manufactured by Merck, which was represented in Austin by the
lobbyist Mike Toomey, who was chief of staff for Mr. Perry from 2002 to 2004.

Ricky Ricardo Perry won’t get my vote in the primary. Don’t wanna see any more ‘Texans’ running for Pres (if you know what I mean;). Besides, Ricky Ricardo Perry is too enamored with his friends from down south (Mehicanos) that he will do another Bush Elfoldo on illegal immigration.

So who is the "RINO"? Certainly not Rick Perry. That is unless you believe Sarah Palin goes around uttering lies.

"[Rick Perry] walks the walk of a true conservative" - Sarah Palin
