The Speech should contain some indication that the speaker actually understands economics so that the hearer knows that the speaker not only wants the outcome we want but knows how to get there. Bush wanted the right outcome but did not know how to get there. Romney wants to be elected. Period. Palin wants all the right things and maybe knows how to get them but she has not yet indicated she has read and understands Adam Smith or von Mises or even Henry Hazlitt. Reagan is the only president we have had in almost a century that actually understood economics. Several have desired free markets and economic liberty but ultimately thought that government manipulation was the way to get those things or the only way to protect them. Saying you want smaller government and less or no government intervention is not enough. One also needs to show that one knows why that is so or when things appear to be collapsing one will be tempted mightily to intervene to “save the economy” and will thereby throw all his good intentions overboard.
