Maine was drawn out of Massachusetts. Vermont was cut out of New York (colony). West Virginia seceded from Virginia. The Northwest Territory started as Wise County Virginia ~ it’s now a bunch of states.

“Can a portion of a State secede from the state and become a state?”

It was wartime, but West Virginia seceded from Virginia.

Well if one Civil War gave us WV the second will give us South California...

Then the illegals would have to cross thru a conservative state to get to LA.

No, they'll just occupy, settle, breed like rabbits and demand "respect" just like they do everywhere else.

Also, part of Hell was broken off and became Illinois.

“In the next 10-15 years,I fully expect several states to break away from the DC, form new republics and then turn into a loose confederation of nation states.”

We laughed when we first considered it.

Can a portion of a State secede from the state and become a state?

Sure can. Isn't even particularly difficult.

Only a majority vote in the legislature of the state affected and in Congress is required, making it a whole lot easier to get through than an amendment,

US Constitution, Article 4, Section 3: New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Proposals have been made to split most states at one time or another.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_partition_proposals

Texas has the right to split into up to 5 states as part of the agreement that brought it into the Union, if Congress agrees. This would give TX 10 senators.

Seriously, with a FLAT broke federal government more concerned about centralized power, HOW will DC even attempt to stop the inevitable.

He was a little early in his prediction. But he still may not be wrong.

Come to think of it, this could be used to give one side a permanent majority in the Senate.

Conservatives have a healthy majority in both Houses of Congress.

They pick out the 20 most conservative states and break each up into three new states. The relevant legislatures and Congress approve the transaction.

We now have 110 states and a permanent 2/3 majority in the Senate.

President doesn’t even get a chance for a veto.

From all the news and general chat about California, you'd think that Callie for the most part is beyond hope and screw them all. I've pissed off more than a few conservative Callies saying this, I'll tell you fer chure.

That said, I've spent a good deal of time in the high desert there near China Lake, Edwards AFB, anywhere not near LA, SF or any damnwhere in between (except for certain pockets). I'd say honor, honesty and work ethic still prevail in these places. They just need to figure out how to maximize their legislative impact and force some sanity on that state's government...How to do this? Hell, I have no frickin idea! Maybe another state is the right idea, but I don't think that'll pass because you'd have to convince Seventy-Eleven Billion Illegals and Liberal Idiots in the currently legalized state to agree.

If it were me, I'd band together and form some sort of irrevocable trust entity where all assets and liabilities in these areas are conglomerated and protected by Federal Trust law....hell, some smart lawyers could figure it out!...

Just sayin'

I believe the State government would have to approve the split and then Congress would have to approve. Not sure though.

The map is really funny. Poor Russkie has obviously never heard of the Mason-Dixon line.

I can really see SC deciding to go with NY and MA.

How about limiting voting to only those who take no state or federal largess?

The other problem they would have is that there are too many other conservative counties in Norther California that would want to join in on the split. Maybe they should cut it into three states.

isn’t there a constitutional rule against making states out of existing states?

“The map is really funny. Poor Russkie has obviously never heard of the Mason-Dixon line.”

It’s clear he went totally by geography, and didn’t consider the culture. A couple of the most glaring errors would be the break between the northeast and southeast, and a midwest split. No way Montana and Wyoming go with Ohio and Illinois.

It’s a nice sentiment and justified in my opinion, but they are going to have to get really tricky in this. You have to deny them access to your assets and protect your liabilities. I think some really smart and greedy lawyers can figure out something to protect the sane part of California, myself.

You said that well.... I’d like to see your ideas work.

I do feel for the conservatives in that state, but it sure looks like it’s lost to me.
