The Treasury Department’s drop-dead date to raise the debt ceiling is still August 2, it was announced Friday, though Democratic officials say the White House believes a deal with congressional Republicans must come by July 22.
In a statement, Assistant Secretary for Financial Markets Mary Miller said Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner “continues to urge Congress to avoid the catastrophic economic and market consequences of a default crisis by raising the statutory debt limit in a timely manner.”
Some observers had hoped that Treasury would be able to push back the deadline and give negotiators representing the White House and congressional Republicans more time to reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling.
Reports late Thursday suggested that the White House sees its the real deadline to reach an agreement as July 22, so there is time to draft legislation and for the bill to make its way through Congress and onto President Barack Obama’s desk.
At his press conference earlier this week, Obama stressed the urgency of reaching a deal, saying that congressional Republicans know a deal must be struck and should not delay action. His 10- and 12-year-old daughters “don’t wait until the night before — they’re not pulling all-nighters” when it comes to doing their homework, and “Congress can do the same thing. … If you know you’re going to do something, just do it.”
