New York Citys vast fleet of vehicles is getting greener. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city is acquiring 50 Chevrolet Volts as part of its strategy to cut air pollution, carbon emissions and gasoline consumption.
The Volts are part of a larger group of electric cars to be used by a number of city departments, but the Volts slated to become police patrol cars are likely to get the most attention. General Motors Co. says the Volt will be the first electric car used by the New York City police department, which already has a diverse collection of vehicles ranging from traditional Ford Crown Victoria sedans to Nissan Altima hybrids to electric scooters and golf carts.
This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the Citys fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation, Bloomberg said of the total of 70 new electric vehicles. The addition boosts the citys electric-vehicle total to 430.

Anyone want to bet that they'll ever catch a crook being chased by one of these?
Perhaps they operate on the understanding that theres no need to send a man where a bullet can go. Given the outrageous stories of NYPD shoot outs makes me think thats true.
It’s so neat to see the city of New York finally doing something about air pollution. They will most certainly cut air pollution, carbon emissions and gasoline consumption with this maneuver. Excellent work, Mayor!
You got that right.
Using "U" in place of an actual word? How ignorant is that?
Given the street layout and city traffic, the NYPD doesn’t get into too many high-speed chases (neither the crooks nor the cops can drive all that fast). I’d bet that these cars won’t be deployed in the NYPD’s highway patrol unit, or other units that are in more open areas where chases can happen.
New York, New York, a helluva town.
The Bronx is up, but the Battery’s down (for a recharge).
It just looks like Unions scratching each others backs to me.
“Excellent work, Mayor!”
Seriously?
Don’t wreck one:

Not too much works quite right in New York City, so why should the police cars be any different.
Give a new meaning to the “Green Police”.
This is sick. Only a delusional person would support such a waste of taxpayer money that puts the lives of the public and officers at risk, with subpar police vehicles.
Belief is AGW should be classified as a mental illness.
NYPD smart cars would probably be far less expensive and less embarassing.
chevy volt official vehicle of the rubber gun squad.
I laugh every time I see a LEO in shorts on a Segway...
The Volt has a top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h).
According to Edmunds.com road tests, the Volt’s 0 to 60 mph (097 km/h) acceleration time is 9.2 seconds running on electric-only mode, and 9.0 seconds with the gasoline engine assisting propulsion.
Motor Trend reports the Volt’s quarter mile (402 m) time is 16.9 sec @ 84.3 mph (135.7 km/h), while Edmunds reports a quarter mile (402 m) time of 16.8 sec @ 81.5 mph (131.2 km/h) in electric-only operation, and 16.6 sec @ 85.5 mph (137.6 km/h) with the gas engine assisting.
Motor Trend reports a 60 to 0 mph (97 to 0 km/h) braking distance of 112 ft (34 m) and Edmunds.com of 124 ft (38 m).

In NYC, its very rare for there to be a cop car chase, it simply a rarity (its also discouraged), and since its an urban environment, you're not seeing cop cars flooring to get from point A to Point B anyway.
Now, if you put this on the highways or something, thats a whole different ball of wax, but you're not going to see these cars doing that. Its not going to reduce the effectiveness of the cops, but it is a pretty big waste of money.
LOL! My Miata has a top speed (top-down, pop-up headlights down) of 118 mph (observed). It would be faster top-up but I've never clocked it. ;-)

In the meantime, the Placer County (CA) Sheriff’s Dept. is unveiling its new Dodge Chargers.
Try to imagine T.J. Hooker having to drive a Volt . . .
