Societies that legitimize substitutes for traditional marriage (homosexual marriage, civil unions, cohabitation) inevitably witness the decline of authentic marriage. Hey, looks like some people are finally waking up. This has been going on for 40 YEARS. Its not new. Gay marriage is just the latest body blow to marriage. Start with "no fault" divorce, which way too many Christians are just fine with. Heck, way too many Christians have availed themselves of it. Then move on to the heterosexual "cohabitation" of the 70s and 80s. Then the "single mom" with kids of the 90s.
Some social conservatives have fought the good fight for years against the destruction of the family. But way too many social conservatives were complacent while marriage was being torn apart over the past several decades. I don't agree with gay marriage, but bitching about it now or calling it the "destruction of marriage" is incredibly short sighted. Marriage has been dying since the Social Revolution of the 60s. And for the most part we've done nothing.

The 60’s was a disease we have never recovered from.

Marriage is the bedrock of civilization. I read a good paper (posted in here) that made a good case for marriage creating civilization. Therefore, the assault on marriage is actually assault on civilization.

exactly right. “no fault” divorce, “shacking up” etc. started this road to “gay marriage”

IMAGINED HEADLINE: Iconoclasts Proud of Smashing the Sacred "Muslims should be proud "So many people are proud of being New Yorkers today. After the Dynamiting and destruction on the Silk Road of the giant, standing Buddhas Vairocana and Sakyamuni, measuring 55 and 37 metres (180 and 121 feet) high respectively which were the largest examples of standing Buddha carvings in the world Mullah Mohammed Omar stated, "Muslims should be proud of smashing idols. We are destroying the statues in accordance with Islamic law." The smaller of the two statues was built in 507, the larger in 554. After the vote reshaping and reworking the oldest and most sacred cultural institution of all of historys cultures Governor Andrew Cuomo said. "So many people are proud of being New Yorkers today. I think New York sent a message to the nation and I think it is going to resonate. and we are going to see real progress. The legacy of New York when it's at its best - New York is the progressive capital of the nation." When interviewed both groups of destructors were dismissive of the feelings of huge numbers of people around the world whose sacred and precious entities they triumphantly destroyed with aggressive intolerance. In NY a massive Gay Pride Parade celebrated the dismemberment of the marriage institution which both anthropologists and philosophers maintain has always been the vital binding elemental component of all societies. This obviously implies ominous penumbral effects for a modern world already in a stage of advanced decomposition.
It had been a long similarly arduous battle for proponents of both of these iconoclasms. Initially, the statues were fired at for several days using anti-aircraft guns and artillery. This damaged them, but did not obliterate them. Later, the Taliban placed anti-tank mines at the bottom of the niches, so that when fragments of rock broke off from artillery fire, the statues would receive additional destruction from particles that set off the mines. In the end, the Taliban lowered men down the cliff face and placed explosives into holes in the Buddhas. The story of this sacrilege is a apt parable describing the iconoclastic act of the New York legislature. In both cases the destruction was legally authorized by majority vote of the local governing councils, the NY Legislature and the Taliban governing body in Afghanistan respectively.
