Dog found with teeth sawed off [dog-fighting bait dog]

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The people at PETS, Inc. see animals come through the door in bad shape everyday, but some there say this one takes the cake.

A dog they've named "Cowboy," walked in their doors timidly Saturday with a tennis ball in his mouth, bite wounds from the nose to tail, underweight and dehydrated. When they opened his mouth to determine his age, they were shocked to see that all of his teeth had been broken or sawed off, indicating that he had been used as a "bait dog" to train juvenile Pit Bulls for fighting.

The skinny Pit Bull was found on Friday on Sandy Run Road in Gaston, an area that has produced other abused dogs, according to PETS, Inc. Cowboy's neck has a gray ring of broken hair typical of a dog who has struggled against a chain, shelter employees said.

When he first got to PETS, Inc., Cowboy paid no attention to the employees or to any of the other dogs in the room.

"It's just an amazing thing that a dog could have been through as much as he's been through and still be so accepting and gentle with people," said Jane Brundage. He was solely focused on the tennis ball that was given to him by the young woman who found him.

No, we went in on the bikes.
[hubby is STILL “fine tuning” his fuel injection system...sheesh!]

Odin loves to go to the pet stores.

He revels in the attention of the crowds he gathers.

I swear, he’s William Shatner in a tight black dog suit.

Odin’s a support dog so he can legally go wherever I go.

[I don’t take him to grocery stores, though....he shoplifts]...LOL

“This place can be really creepy, sometimes.”

Indeed. Just start talking about animal abuse and the abusers and excusers come out like cockroaches — usually under the guise of “A dog is property and I can do what I want with it” or the famoous “Why isn’t this thread about abortion?” blah blah blah....

I remember a thread about Vick and there were a few FReepers who made all kinds of excuses for him. Truly nauseating.

Hearts are especially good for Dobes.

They’re packed with L-Carnitine and Taurine, which Dobes need a *lot* of.

I was feeding him the supplements but everything is better in its natural form.

Now, if only the check-out girls would stop going “EEEEEEEE-YEWWWWW!!!!!” when I go through the line with a dozen packs of them....:))

[you think “fur baby” gets you weird looks, try saying “Widdle Bubby-Wubby” to a 30” Dobe out in public, sometime]

;D

My bike is property.
My house is property.
My computer is property.

My *dogs* are my living, breathing, sentient companions by mutual agreement and affection.

Anybody who doesn’t like my “outlook” can just bite me.

Anybody who harms my dogs will find out just exactly how nice I can excruciatingly *not* be.

I love your outlook!!

BTW, where do you get your organ meats? I shop at Whole Foods and can rarely find liver (veal and chicken). Never find anything else...would love to be able to, though!

No, but it *could*.

Mr Wise Guy understands automatic doors quite well.

We were in PetCo one time and he nearly barked the rafters down because the door to the grooming salon *refused* to open at his mere presence.

He approached/retreated/approached several times, expecting it respectfully grant him ingress before he gave it a hearty woofing what-for.

Stupid, disobedient, insolent door!

How *dare* it refuse him entrance!

LOL

Did you see the one where the family recognized her as their dog and took her back to pay for it? (She got another one while she was there, lol!) Cute, but she took a long trip by foot. Hope they pay a little more attention to her “travels” or her days may be few! :((

Lion Food...er...Food Lion, where else?

:D

It could be a local issue for you, though.

Out here in Hillbilly Heaven, our meat departments all carry tongue, hearts, chitlins, kidneys, ox tails, tripe, hog maws, pig tails, pig feet and all that yummy offal....LOL

Check the yellow pages to see if you have an on-site/farming butcher in the area.

Thanks for the tip! We don’t have one of those stores, but you’ve given me a lead. Appreciate it!

Or offal treats.

I just saw that video where they bring the dog back to "apologize." LOL

They should have made it pick up trash as community service.

One man’s trash is another dog’s treasure. He’d probably love to pick up “trash” in the park.

My Podengo Gypsy should’ve worked for public sanitation.

I don’t know where she finds it all but every time I get up, she trots over with a little piece of scrap paper or tiny fluff of former stuffed toy as a “gift”.

If can’t find those, she’ll offer me a piece of uneaten kibble.

Yum.

[she sure must think her existence here is really tenuous if she’s always bribing me to love her]...;]

“they do implants for dogs just like they do people”

I never knew that!! That is amazing and you are right... without it, the jaw does deform (I have seen that up close).

And I will stick by my word: where there is smoke, there is fire. There is always a grain of truth to the hype.

There was/is with GS, with Rotts and Dobes. Not as much as PBTs and their like, but there is.

I just described there IS aggression problem in GS - and it often depends on the bloodlines. There are many strains of GS; some tend to be worse than others. There; you heard it from a GS lover - no, I don’t want them to be cowards or nonchalant, but I don’t want GS aggressive (as opposed to BOLD and ASSERTIVE), either. As long as there is a big emphasis on “protection sports”, there will be at least some aggression problem in our breed (and conversely, fear-aggression with those who care not a whit about breeding strong nerves).

At least I can acknowledge that there is a problem within GS and you have to watch out for it. There was a reason for the overhype - because problems were greater than they should’ve been.

Do you honestly believe there is going to be a media sensation over Golden Retriever attacks? Or let’s say a less popular dog like Collies? No, because it won’t happen. Maybe in 100 years when possibly some have bred them bad for a long time. They’re innocuous dogs by and large and any attempt to turn them into evildoers would be laughed at.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter whether they tend to have dog-aggression only; that is a problem and humans get caught in the middle. No rationalizing that people just have to stay out of the way or know how to break up a fight is going to change that.

The dogs were originally bred to fight BULLS - nasty illogical stupid aggressive heavy beasts. Never mind each other, later. But it doesn’t matter. That’s going to translate to generalized aggression for alot of individuals.
