WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The people at PETS, Inc. see animals come through the door in bad shape everyday, but some there say this one takes the cake.
A dog they've named "Cowboy," walked in their doors timidly Saturday with a tennis ball in his mouth, bite wounds from the nose to tail, underweight and dehydrated. When they opened his mouth to determine his age, they were shocked to see that all of his teeth had been broken or sawed off, indicating that he had been used as a "bait dog" to train juvenile Pit Bulls for fighting.
The skinny Pit Bull was found on Friday on Sandy Run Road in Gaston, an area that has produced other abused dogs, according to PETS, Inc. Cowboy's neck has a gray ring of broken hair typical of a dog who has struggled against a chain, shelter employees said.
When he first got to PETS, Inc., Cowboy paid no attention to the employees or to any of the other dogs in the room.
"It's just an amazing thing that a dog could have been through as much as he's been through and still be so accepting and gentle with people," said Jane Brundage. He was solely focused on the tennis ball that was given to him by the young woman who found him.

Looks like maybe a pit mix in other photos. The other photos show he is definitely a very smart dog too. Most dogs get mean as hell after prolonged abuse. This is really an exceptional dog.
And some here would ridicule you [and me..and lots of others] for doing that.

My diagnosis is that they suffer from a severe case of lead deficiency.
Stories like this make me sick! Such a sweet dog. He loves his tennis ball and I thought that this was probably the first act of kindness and joy he ever experienced. A tennis ball...

I agree that someone that could do this is a menace to society. To abuse animals in this way is beyond my comprehension.
However, I’ll have to disagree about pit bulls. Dogs are bred to bring out characteristics. Certain breeds have strong traits. Beagles bark. Border collies have boundless energy. Pit bulls tend towards a protective/aggressive nature. There are other breeds like that, and it doesn’t mean all pit bulls are mean. It just means you have to be extra careful how you raise them. Couple that with their incredible jaw strength, and you can see how they get a bad reputation.
Hmmm.
I sense a “heavy metal justice” theme, here.
Happy dogs are pleasant company not to mention obedient.
They should take the bastards who did this, strip them naked, knock all their teeth our and toss them into a pitfull of their damn fighting pit bulls - better yet, a LARGE pack of very hungry wolves or bears.
Society has a RIGHT to eliminate low bred scum like this from the breeding pool in an adequately sufficient manner.
Bastards like this have lost their cards to the human race.
As a matter of fact, the above should be a standard way of dealing with ANYONE who engages in “dog-fighting”.
