I'm a big fan of General MacArthur, but he did make mistakes. Losing his Air Corp in the Philippines 12 hours after Perl Harbor was huge, that was he thinking?

After Inchon his campaign in Korea was less then brilliant. I've read Chicom intelligence had compromised his efforts. Maybe, but I think age had finally caught up with him. He was in his 70's, hell he was retired at the start of WW2. He should have been honorably relieved of his command in Japan years before Korea even started. Truman was a jerk. Long time inactive Marine here too :)

Oh one other thing, I have not read that much on Korea, I love military history but Korea just depresses me on so many levels. Horrible war, horrible waste, nothing accomplished.

In 1980, when I was first stationed in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Casey, by Tongduchon, it was a glorious tour. I had a real good time, even with all of the alerts, the use of script for downtown purchases, the requirement for passes to leave post. The people were very friendly and it was enjoyable just to be off-post and walking around, or going down to Seoul on the bus to walk around the shopping districts.

My second tour to Camp Casey in 1988 was less enjoyable, the people .. particularly those in Seoul .. were far less friendly. I spent a lot more time on-post, even though we could now use dollars downtown and the pass privileges were a lot more lenient.

My final tour to Camp Casey in 1994 was very unpleasant. Other than the Korean nationals, KATUSAs, and the very old people, it didn't seem like anyone was friendly with Americans and, except for specific purchase trips, I pretty much remained on Camp Casey for my entire tour.

After my first tour, I recommended to anyone who asked that a one-year tour to Korea was the best kept secret in the Army. After my last tour, my attitude was that we should let the North have the South, even for just a little bit, so that they would wipe out all of those anti-American student ***holes that infested the country.

Thank you very much for your service.

I just have a question -— Based on your experience, do you think the South Koreans, with their new found prosperity and ample technology, and their large male population, are able to defend themselves against the North?

If so, let’s get the hell outta there and reduce our deficit and spending further.

Materially and financially, yes. However, while individual units are superb and will fight and die to the last man (ask any Vietnam vet about Korean soldiers), overall, my gut feeling is that the command, political, and social structure will collapse like a wet kleenex.
