That will be a tough trend to reverse.
It isn't going to be reversed. When you talk to college-age kids through maybe late-30's, most will flat out tell you that they don't see anything wrong with gay marriage, and/or they don't want the government in their business.
I don't see how one gets around that.
There are dangerous pitfalls in telling young people that when the Democrats (liberals) want to control your life, it's wrong, but when the Republicans (conservatives) want to do it, it's a really good idea.
As for myself, I am a libertarian at heart, and would like to see the issue taken out of government hands entirely. Everyone gets a civil union, unless they take the step of getting their church of choice to perform religious vows.
Why should it be the government's place to tell you with whom you can make a contract as long as you are adults?
The government will always use the power given to take more and use it against citizens. Why people clamor for more government control over their neighbors and refuse to understand that the same power will one day be used against them is beyond comprehension.
It is an inevitability. We've already seen it in family law, and yet people clamor for more, ignorantly thinking that this time it'll be different. It's never different.

Who said Republicans are trying to control anything. Its just that men and women go together as naturally intended and men-men/women-women do not. It is a historical and traditional fact of life. No amount of lawyerly wordsmithing and forced acceptance will ever change that. Black is black and white is white. You can decree the opposite, but the facts remain.
Its about bringing down society as well as money & benefits. If you allow gays to marry, why not room mates? After all, your room mate deserves to have your work benefits don't they? What about incest or marrying your family pet?
There must be some standard or society crumbles.
The same exact trend takes place on a host of issues. The trend on how many young people viewed abortion as a right has certainly been changing. So why?
I say the truth ends up winning out in the end and the battle must be continued to educate young people and society as a whole.
And you call yourself a libertarian as if that should be the answer for conservatives as well. BS.
The entire reason that the left-wing is able to sway young people to believe in things like abortion rights and homosexual rights is because they use libertarian type arguments to do so. Libertarianism is a tool of the left-wing they use to distort the ideals of liberty and out flank conservatives to appear more aligned with freedom and liberty.
Libertarianism though is extremely misguided as an ideology of liberty and freedom being that it gives no respect at all for a person’s right to representation on issues of public safety and issues of public decency. Young people though are not concerned as much with these issues yet because they do not fully understand them.
By claiming that we should get the government out of the marraige business you are claiming that we should give up our right to representation on the issue as well.
So what next should we give up our right to representation on?
Should we give it up on all issues of public decency? Let people walk naked through public? Let people have sex on their front lawns? Just give up all say on these issues?
Should we get out of the business of legislating the ‘age of consent’? Just let people start their kids on a path of sexual relations with adults from whatever age they decide they want to?
Libertarianism is a Marxist tool designed to attack the conservative ideal of individual liberty. It takes that ideal and makes the most extreme example out of it in order to undermine it.
