Betty Ford said things that first ladies just don't say, even today. And 1970s America loved her for it.
According to Mrs. Ford, her young adult children probably had smoked marijuana - and if she were their age, she'd try it, too. She told "60 Minutes" she wouldn't be surprised to learn that her youngest, 18-year-old Susan, was in a sexual relationship (an embarrassed Susan issued a denial).

After reading a bunch of recent FR threads, I am gradually coming to the same conclusion.
I met Betty Ford once, just shook her hand and said hello, but it helps make her a real person to me, not just a famous name in a headline.
Rest in peace.
I remember when Kerry was running for Prez. The Edwards had plane trouble and had to turn back to the airport. FR prayed for their safety.
Not too long after, I think it was Cheney who had a heart "episode". DU was practicing "dancing on his grave".
It showed the difference between conservatives and liberals. On this thread? Not so much.
“That is one of the nastiest comments I have ever heard. She did more to help alcoholics than anyone since Bill Wilson. Shame on you.”
With all the drunken libs in Hollywood, I don’t see too many centers named for them. Or for cancer treatment.
If anything, what she did was feminist.
RIP Betty
Is there to be a judgment? The Bible says yes. Is the truth the truth? We as a society have gotten to the point where we can’t hear or know the truth.
Not yet it isn't. FReepers aren't done spanking the clueless.
Yes .. wondering where the ‘monitoring’ has gone.
She helped thousands, and likely saved maybe millions of people .. both from addiction and breast cancer and cancer issues .. and monumentally more than any creeps here spouting despicably disrespectful hatred at the time of a death.
Maybe it’s the ‘Friday night happy time’ syndrome, but it’s
unacceptable and contemptible at the death of a First Lady, flawed as every single of one of us are, who labored to correct her failings as best as she could, and helped so many along the way.
The Clintons are finally sleeping together!
In 40 years, I’ll be 104.
Funny thing about the whingers complaining that conservatives have no grace - this thread is full of nothing but a fine example of the grace, and graciousness, of conservatives, particularly in the face of what is most clearly a troll’s inflammatory comment.
That was a loathsome and repugnant thing to write about her, or anyone, at a time like this.
I believe FR has been changing along with society in general.
True Conservatives© get me every time. It's like as if, no one ever accounts for the retarded.
Can’t say I disagree ... sad .. notably sad and concerning.
Let me see if I have this straight: we should allow trolls to do what they wish in order to prove our superiority?
Looking at this thread, there are those willing to correct bad behavior.
Very true. Much of America did not care for her uberfeminist and irreligious liberal social views (pro-abortion and marched with Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem, for God’s sake!). May have made the difference in Jerry Ford’s narrow 1976 defeat. There were some weird voting patterns there: Ford won in irreligious liberal strongholds such as college towns that had been among the few places to go for McGovern in 1972, while Carter won the lion’s share of the more numerous “Christian conservatives,” as they would later be called. Of course, Reagan reversed Carter’s gains among these voters in 1980.
I’m confused. I never would have guessed that the DUmp would have more class than some FReepers when discussing a recently deceased republican first lady.
I went to her daughter [Susan’s] Prom - held in the East Room of the WH.
Prez Ford & Betty showed up - and she asked me to dance with her and I did. She was a hoot! Definitely was not shy about having fun. But, as I know now, it may have been the pills ...
A few years later, a girl I worked with got married and had her reception at Chevy Chase Country Club. Apparently, her father was politically connected and Prez Ford [and Betty] were invited. She remembered me and asked me to dance again.
She was a nice lady ...
I believe Oceander is saying that we are politely attempting to ask the trolls to show a little common decency and civility in respecting the late Mrs. Ford as her family mourns her passing.
Playing doormat isn’t an option.
