Barack Obama was eight years old when Neil Armstrong made his “one small step for Man” on the face of the Moon, and now as President, Obama has told NASA: “been there, done that.” Instead of aiming toward creation of a base on the Moon, as envisioned by his predecessor, President Obama wants to target deep space. “We’ve set a goal to let’s ultimately get to Mars. “We’ve set a goal to let’s ultimately get to Mars. A good pit stop is an asteroid,” Clueless fool. Visiting an asteroid is a nice idea, but it is by no means "along the way" to a landing on Mars. A mission to Mars is a massive, complicated affair, and 90% of the technological and logistical hurdles that would need to be resolved would NOT be addressed by a mission to an asteroid.

I don;t think Obama sees an American space program leading to a landing on Mars. His vision would be for some other, more worthy country, to explore deep space. His words are empty rhetoric. He doesn't intend the US to excel anymore, other than in promoting dependency and dependency payments.
