Fla. Legislator Proposes Caylee’s Law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – The outrage over the not guilty verdict in the Casey Anthony trial has reached the Florida Legislature.

Wednesday, Representative Bill Hager, R-Boca Raton, introduced what is being called, “Caylee’s Law,” according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The law would make it a felony for a parent or legal guardian to fail to timely report a missing child in cases where the parent knew or should have known that the child was possibly in danger, the Sentinel reported.

Rep. Hager said that the law will “ensure that parents are held responsible for their actions.” He continued, “It will also assure that we put justice on the side of those among us who are most vulnerable. And finally, it will put an end to the kind of irresponsible and outrageous behavior we observed with Caylee’s mother.”

Pretty sad to see so many “conservatives” buying all the hype and condoning a new nanny state law.

You can add retired military to that list. We will never serve jury duty on a felony or capital case. Looking at the jury profile, it is about as brain dead as you can get:

Wouldn’t that fall under child neglect? We have enough laws. They just need to be enforced.

Listening to a local program this morning, a lawyer called in and said that if the judge didn't agree with the decision of the jury, he could over-turn it. While the judge in the Anthony case probably couldn't over-turn either of the murder charges (1st degree or manslaughter), couldn't he over-turn the one on negligence? Is it too late now for that to happen?

Casey is just crazy enough that she’d show up for the bills signing.

There are already laws dealing with evidence tampering, aiding and abetting and failure to report a crime or potential crime. I think they are felonies. Not a lawyer. Does this proposed new law close a loophole in the law is is it an exercise in legislature feel good.?

Here’s a list of the jurors.

Some winners but lots of losers. I don’t understand - if they don’t believe in the death penalty, how are they “death penalty qualified” jurors.

If they had hit hard with everything they had, then Casey would have been charged with murder. The jury can only charge with what they are presented with.

More reactionary, statism.

Sit down and catch your breath, Hager.

Gosh, I guess now the Prosecution wishes they had shown that video of Casey killing caylee, stuffing her into the trunk for days, then dumping her in the swamp! You're right, it was kind of dumb not to show that

Seems like such a failure to report should fit existing child endangerment statutes?

Was the prosecution not allowed to participate in jury selection?

Not reporting Caylee missing allowed the forensic evidence to decay - allowing a killer to go free. I understand this new law. In the Anthony case, the mother knew for a month her child was dead and simply let her rot in a swamp. Something is very wrong with that.

I don't like new laws. We have so many already, but in order to keep ourselves free, we need a moral and just society. Unfortunately, morals and justice are politically incorrect. That corrupts our system, and forces us to constantly come up with band Aids to stop the immoral and unjust bleeding.

Something is wrong when a parent or guardian can let a child go missing forever without reporting it. I'm afraid I'm going to have to support this law. I wish I didn't feel I had to. It's a shame we even have to consider it.
