Fla. Legislator Proposes Caylee’s Law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – The outrage over the not guilty verdict in the Casey Anthony trial has reached the Florida Legislature.

Wednesday, Representative Bill Hager, R-Boca Raton, introduced what is being called, “Caylee’s Law,” according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The law would make it a felony for a parent or legal guardian to fail to timely report a missing child in cases where the parent knew or should have known that the child was possibly in danger, the Sentinel reported.

Rep. Hager said that the law will “ensure that parents are held responsible for their actions.” He continued, “It will also assure that we put justice on the side of those among us who are most vulnerable. And finally, it will put an end to the kind of irresponsible and outrageous behavior we observed with Caylee’s mother.”

Which is an unnecessary calumny. Rob, a moment of intoxication does not make a person a permanent idiot. It’s a teachable moment for the erring, not an opportunity to use the language of ostracism.

I’ll think about it.

Okay, I thought about it. All is forgiven. :)

Odd that such a law needs to be stated.

So, now you continue with more insults to those that disagree with you.

Liberal, now FOREST GUMP. just so creative. When I posted my first about all this, it did not ask for your opinion. But since you did, I responded back with mine.

I apoligized to Bykrbayb for thinking it was her that called me a "LIBERAL", I hit the reply button to the wrong person. My comment to her was meant for you, and how dare you insult anyone on this forum with waving the "LIBERAL FLAG" at them when you disagree with them.

Like I said before, I have been on this forum for MANY YEARS, and this is a first. Never could you find ANYTHING in any of my posts, THAT WOULD SUGGEST A DAMN Liberal.

You may disagree, but you are not entitled to INSULT.

I am still for this law, and will do what I can to promote it, it does not take away any right to anyone.

After 24hours and not to report a missing child, something is just wrong with that. Yes, CAylee would still be dead, but at least the JURY could not ignore the FELONY Charge OF MISSING, if even the Law would need a Jury for that. Guess the Amber Law was not to everyone liking either.

Thank you very much and so cute the way you put it. We can still disagree on the issue.

>>Having an opinion of a NEW LAW that could/would possibly help does not make one a liberal.<<

Yes it does.

I hear people use the words “common sense” and “no brainer” regarding this law. It they would take a moment to consider the fallout from such a law - Just TEN minutes - they would realize that a giving up of individual freedom for EVERY parent to POSSIBLY spare a child or two would be lunacy.

And it is VERY much a liberal law.

>>All the years I have been on here, and not agreed with some, I WOULD NEVER resort to insults.<<

Calling someone a liberal is not insulting them. Calling them stupid or an idiot is. The word “liberal” has a pretty clear meaning. Part of it is government intrusion on our private lives, which is EXACTLY what this law does.

“I don't believe that's true, otherwise there would be no such thing as “double jeopardy”.”

It would seem that you are correct.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_a_judge_overturn_an_jury_decision says that a GUILTY verdict can be over-turned, but not an INNOCENT verdict for the reason that it would be DOUBLE JEOPARDY. This is based on federal law, but it says “most state court rules are modeled after the Federal Rules and all will have some variation of the authority to set aside a guilty verdict.”

NO it does not make one a LIBERAL, and to call someone on on this FORUM that ugly word is just wrong. NOW

YOU said: ""they would realize that a giving up of individual freedom for EVERY parent to POSSIBLY spare a child or two would be lunacy.""""

Just try to explain to me or anyone else the PRICE of a child? A parent looses their FREEDOM when they fail to be responsible parents, that is just what Casey A. did.

Do you hold these same views toward ABORTION? You for or against a law to save a child from abortion. That act should also be criminal, it is murder.

Awesome idea.....but shouldn’t there already be laws on the books......like child neglect, that would cover this?

Here in Houston we have a whacked out mom that drowns her 5 kids in a bathtub, and she gets SYMPATHY.

We have a bunch of the Andrea Yates fan club posting on FR, celebrating this verdict.

We are becoming a lost people.

ON this FORUM, being called a LIBERAL is in eveyone thoughts and INSULT any way you want to cut it. Especially in the manner in which you approached my remarks on the subject.

Even so much that Bykybayb came back at you with, her remark of Annieokie is not a liberal.

It was meant to insult as well as the FORREST GUMP remark.

Calling someone a liberal is just about the most insulting thing you can say. Annieokie does not deserve that. She’s really a very nice person, with solid conservative values.

It’s past my bedtime. Good night.

Thank you very much for those kind words, and again I am so sorry for all the confusion.

We may disagree, but not insult. Thank you for that defense.

So, I too am going to bed and they can TALK TO THE HAND. LOL Nite

There’s a saying in the legal community: “Tough cases make bad law.”

That's the one I was trying to remember.

Sad to see so many Freepers in such a hurry to grant the government more power and eager to see another ill defined law placed on the books.

That's what we get from these braindead idiots who listen to Hannity and think if somebody isn't on tape committing a crime they are innocent. Never mind the physical evidence.

Now there will be more laws.

Brilliant, nice going America.

This is exactly how we got the TSA groping 95 year old grandmothers at the airport.

Overreacting to a terrible tragedy with hurried legislation is NEVER a good idea.
