TSA warns airlines of 'human bombs' By: Jennifer Epstein July 6, 2011 10:50 AM EDT
Transportation security officials are warning airlines on Wednesday that “human bomb” terrorists may try to use surgically implanted explosives to blow up planes.
Though there is no intelligence about a specific plot, the Transportation Security Administration is nonetheless urging domestic and international carriers to be aware of the potential threat.
The warnings are part of an effort “to provide greater insights into recent intelligence indicating the continued interest of terrorists to target aviation,” TSA press secretary Nick Kimball said in a statement.
“Due to the significant advances in global aviation security in recent years, terrorist groups have repeatedly and publicly indicated interest in pursuing ways to further conceal explosives,” he added.
A U.S. security official told POLITICO that the threat is seen as more “likely to come from overseas rather than domestically but we are taking precautionary steps both internationally and here in the U.S.”
As security measures become more sophisticated, terrorists have sought out new ways to conceal explosives, and surgically implanted bombs are one of the latest tactics that terrorists are believed to be trying to use.
In a memo sent to Britain’s transportation department, the TSA said the U.S. government “has information indicating doctors have offered to help extremists surgically implant explosive devices in humans and animals for terrorist attacks,” the Daily Mirror reported Wednesday. The memo notes that airports don’t have one surefire way to screen for the bombs.

Well let’s go back to pre September 11th airport security.
At the time box cutters were permitted since they were less than 3” (I think was the length) knife. The ONLY other thing that has happened with airport security was Richard Reed the Shoe Bomber. BTW, it was the people in the plane that stopped Richard Reed .
The TSA is NOT needed. They have done more harm than any good. Air travel is down since the TSA has been created. They have not only cost the airlines and all the people associated around it. They have hurt tourist and vacation places too.
If the government was really concern about terrorist, then they would secure the borders. The only people they seem to want to target are babies, grandma and veterans.
I’m going to eat chili and raw cauliflower with veggie dip. Just let ‘em touch me, I’ll show ‘em “human bomb”
Why bother with all this? Just blow people up who are waiting in the TSA lines. That would make headlines.
Then we’d all have to be searched prior to entering the TSA lines...and so on and so forth.
This is theater and nothing else.
We’re taking a vacation to New Orleans in November & we’re driving (from Oregon) because I don’t want to go thru TSA. We should all start writing both the airlines AND our congressman & senators & say we won’t put up with this anymore. I’ll take my chances with a terrorist event over being treated like a criminal by my government!
And really, it is so unnecessary. Most people make reservations in plenty of time to do a quick background check, like a credit check. Then they would only need to scrutinize last-minute reservations, or those from certain countries or backgrounds. It really is inexcusable that we have to put up with this!

My point is how do you get there? One reason government gets so big is size insulates the politicians. Have you ever seen a mayor take the heat for a crime wave? No it’s always the police chief or some fall guy.
Show me and us FReepers how to get there (back to pre-9/11 security) and then let’s do it.

Since the morning of September 11, 2001, the airline industry has been in crisis, just as the terrorists want.
I understand your qualms and your reluctance to fly, and I feel much the same way. I’m just saying that it’s not good for the country, the economy, or any of us.
And I don’t have any answers.
This wouldn’t be that hard.
The bomber swallows a series of horse-pill sized bomblets made of C4, all wired together, with a wire coming up the gullet. Could even use an actual fuse, to avoid metal.
A battery or match is all it takes to have a good batch of C4 explode.
Frankly, insertion elsewhere is probably easier, and avoids the stomach pains.
Damn! If only we knew who it was that wants to kill us. We could then be on the look out for those type people. If only we knew. If only we knew.

You do understand that the airlines are victims in all of this, don’t you?
Do you know that there is no federal regulation regarding the use of electronic devices on planes? That absurd rule is imposed by airlines, and could be ceased in a moment. (If electronic devices had any capability to interfere with navigation, they’d be banned on board.)
However, that most likely won't deter the TSA from groping said well-endowed females.
I absolutely do understand. But they need to know that they’re losing business because of the TSA. If we all pushed back, we could make them find a more reasonable method of security.
Like I said, they could do a credit check to find out if they need to worry about a particular individual. And even with identity theft, they could probably eliminate 99% of the pat-down nonsense we’re dealing with now.
Just as using an airliner as a guided missile occurred to Tom Clancy well before 9/11.
The streak of light startled Sato, and he flinched somewhat from surprise rather than fear, then saw the missile heading for his left-inboard engine. He selected his point of impact just as finely as any routine landing, and his last thought was that if they could kill his family and disgrace his country, then they would pay a very special price for that. His last voluntary act was to select the point of impact, two thirds of the way up the stone steps. That would be just about perfect, he knew…
