FARGO Police have identified the victim of Monday's fatal fireworks accident as Jesse William Burley, 41.
An eyewitness here says a Fourth of July fireworks accident decapitated the Fargo man Monday night.
Chris Hanson, who lives down the street from the victim, was packing up his car to leave north Fargos Riviera Heights mobile home park when the accident happened as tornado sirens sounded just before 9:30 p.m.
Burley, Hansons neighbor, was getting ready to set off a second round of what Hanson said he believes was either a homemade or illegal artillery shell firework.
He went over into the middle of the street, and within 10 seconds of us talking to him, he lit it and all we saw was a cloud of smoke, a bang, Hanson said.
What Hanson saw next sent him immediately into shock, he said.
When I walked up to his body, it was nothing but his shoulders down, Hanson said this morning.

You’ll put your eye out.
He should have quit while he was a head.
Muslim bottle rocket.
“The accident should be used as an example of how dangerous fireworks can be, Hanson said.
Im never going to light a firecracker off again in my life, he said.”
What a $%*@ pussy. Fireworks don’t say “return to the US Government immediately”. Obviously this guy got into some military ordinance.
I assume that the guy talking to the reporter will stop driving or riding in cars the next time an accident happens and someone gets killed .. what an idiot!
And, and as for the guy who blew his head off ... yeah, he was an idiot too.
It’s still early, but this guy’s my candidate for the 2011 Darwin Award.
Will someone second the nomination?
Fireworks are illegal in Fargo.
These particular “fireworks” had a warning to call the U.S. Govt if found.
Seems to me the friend who is still alive and did not immediately call the police after seeing these unusual fireworks is culpable in this tragedy, morally if not legally.
Darwin awards all around. Just thank God no kids were in the way.
Then he would have been ahead of the game!
Understatement of the year award.
Must have been a 44 magnum shell
‘Hey y’all, watch this!!!’
Second the nomination.
Independence Day weekend has been good for Darwin candidates....how about that guy in upstate NY riding helmetless in a anti-helmet law protest who flipped over his handlebars?
Hold ma beer!
This one sounds a bit worse than a local incident a couple years ago. Two of our finest citizens decided to celebrate July 4 by firing a parachute flare stolen from the Army.
It landed on the roof of a factory, igniting a fire that burned for three days, doing $50 million damage, but at least no one was killed.
OH my gosh! Amazing no one was killed in or near the factory! Hope the bozos with this brilliant scheme paid dearly for their actions...but this being the USA, I bet they didn’t.
We need a sub-category for best Fruedenshade.
I’ll second that.
