ATLANTA Educators at nearly four dozen Atlanta elementary and middle schools cheated on standardized tests by either helping students or changing the answers once exams were handed in, according to the results of a yearlong state investigation released Tuesday.
The report said that 178 teachers and principals cheated, though only 82 educators actually confessed to misconduct dating as far back as 2001 and affecting thousands of school children, according to a synopsis handed out by Gov. Nathan Deal's office. More than half of the district's 100 schools were examined, and 44 of those had cheating, the synopsis said.
The investigators also found a "culture of fear, intimidation and retaliation" in the school district over the cheating allegations, which lead to educators lying about the cheating or destroying documents to cover it up, according to the synopsis. School officials had "warnings" as early as 2005 that there was cheating on standardized tests, but those signals "were ignored," according to the synopsis.
Deal would not give out any further details or release the voluminous report because he said it contains "very specific information" about educators. The results of the investigation are being forwarded to prosecutors, and many of the cases could lead to criminal charges, he said.

Cheating should only be allowed in minority schools. It is not fair to allow cheating in schools where they are in mostly white areas. Cheating should be legal for the oppressed minorities. How can they be expected to actually compete against the well heeled oppressors?
Which can be difficult if the parent(s) never had 'learning' as a priority to begin with.
The breakdown of the family unit (especially in minority families) often make teaching difficult as best.
No consistency, no authority, no discipline. In the Bible it says "spare the rod, spoil the child". I'm not sure that today's parents understand that principle. We live in a society where consistency, authority, and discipline have been thrown down the sewer. Our society rewards the cheats and fakes. The children notice, even if the adults don't.
No, let’s keep the tests and give them honestly, then they will mean something. Grades can be a popularity contest or one could grade on a curve in a room full of idiots.
The kids will be taking turns writing a hundred times on the blackboard:
“I will not pistol whip my teacher in class”
“I will not pistol whip my teacher in class”
et cetera et cetera
EVERY American Public School teacher works in bureacratic hell tormented by bizarre parents and toxic students. A place where God is forbidden, forgotten and denied.
Golly, Union monopolied schools cheating and using intimidation to shut whistle blowers up. Destroying documents, lying... sheesh, who would have ever guessed these good liberal democrats would lie, cheat, and intimidate in order to create what ever results they wanted. Now who woulda thunk that?????
/so much sarcasm I can’t lift it with a a backhoe.
SOP for Atlanta/Fulton County schools....cost per student dwarfs other Georgia counties yet they have to cheat to show progress. Wonder where all the money went? Not in teaching I’d say.
One of the teacher’s unions chiefs said the reason for the cheating was that standardized testing required by No Child Left Behind put undue pressure on teachers to teach to the test rather than “educate” the children. This pressure caused them to cheat. Therefore standardized testing should be eliminated.
This is analagous to a burglar who steals the furniture from a home blaming his crime on the furniture. The union official would argue if you want to eliminate the crime, do not furnish the home.
>>Amish kids was it?<<
From Lower Botswana.
Looks like teachers are trying to become just as disliked as politicians. Thanks to the unions the teachers have thrown themselves off the pedestal that we had them on.
And your “...5th Grade achievement level...” is likely a stretch....try getting some of those graduates to read for you...
You are absolutely right. This is happening all over our nation. Many Administrators (Principles, Superintendents, ? School Boards) are requiring that teachers do what they have to do so that students pass.
Is this so that the ratings are higher for the schools? Is it because of the pressure from parents? Is is because of pressure from city/state administrations? Is it because teachers themselves need to be rated higher for tenure, etc.? Is is strictly racial?
I personally know a teacher who was required, to raise the grades of his students by the administration, while he worked in Tennessee and Florida, so the students received passing marks even if they had grades of 0.
The pressure on the teachers in these schools has turned away many good people.
This could be any public school.
There is a lot of pressure to just pass the kids. The cheating at the elementary level is much more widespread.
My wife is a teacher, for now. She doesn’t play ball, and is in trouble for it.
The Left half of the Bell Curve has to be erased, since all people are precisely equal. There can be no variation allowed. (Except for our Leftist Betters.)
Remind me again why we don't shoot cheats.
The purpose of public education is not to educate. The purpose is to ethnically cleanse affordable neighborhoods and to steal taxes from the productive class.
LOL, they replaced this winner with another superintendent of similar background (and beliefs, values, etc, I'm sure) from Prince Georges Cty, MD!
This is the very predictable result of affirmative action. You simply cannot enforce two separate standards on a group of people. The de facto standard will revert to the lower one.
Whoever thought a good way to integrate blacks into the workplace would be to hold them to lower standards than their eventual classmates and co-workers should be shot.
