Stem cell agency's top salaries stand out on [CA] state roster [will be asking taxpayers...]
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 5, 2011 | Jack Dolan

Reporting from Sacramento— California's stem cell research agency says it needs billions more taxpayer dollars to deliver on promised cures to major diseases. Yet at a time when other departments are cutting back spending, the agency recently agreed to pay its new boss one of the highest salaries in state government.

The 50-person grant-making body will pay a Los Angeles investment banker $400,000 to serve as its new part-time board chairman, pushing the combined salaries of its two top officials to nearly $1 million per year.

Santa Monica-based Saybrook Capital founder Jonathan Thomas — chosen over a former cardiologist who was willing to take the job for less than half the salary — said his pay is "reasonable" because he has the background to help the agency raise the money it needs to survive. "Without funding, everything else suffers," Thomas said.

Voters approved a $3-billion ballot measure establishing the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine in 2004. In a high-profile campaign, proponents argued that embryonic stem cell research held the key to curing cancer, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries and other maladies.

More than $1 billion has already been awarded as grants or spent on agency operations, and scientists say possible cures are years if not decades away, given the painfully slow progress of medical exploration. Now, institute officials acknowledge that they plan to ask voters for at least another $3 billion in the next few years to keep the agency going.

"Voters approved a $3-billion ballot measure establishing the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine in 2004."

Democrat voters.

Ones that typically don't pay taxes.

/////////The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) was created by California’s Proposition 71 (2004), which authorized it to issue $3 billion in grants, funded by bonds, over ten years for embryonic stem cell and other biomedical research. It is claimed to be the world’s largest single backer of research in stem cells.\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The first 3 billion was funded by California issuing bonds which means the taxpayers are on the hook (plus paying interest) for decades instead of just the current year. This stem cell institute is undoubtedly asking California to issue more bonds for more funding. California’s’ credit rating is not good so the interest payments will be greater this time around.

Why not hold a telethon boasting all their successes so far?

Remember other stem cell research protocols which were going to be THE breakthrough to cure cancer, alzheimers, dementia, diabetes, warts, and halitosis?

Where is that now?

Oh, wait -- THIS ONE -- REALLY, WE MEAN IT THIS TIME -- is going to be THE one that breaks through.

Why is it that it seems that every program which just HAS to be funded or else kittens will die seems to turn out to be a way for our elected elites to funnel taxpayer money to something that gives them support in their district?

Why is it voters keep buying into this?

U.S. citizens pay high prices for medicines. why? Well, because of development costs, of course.

We also pay for the development costs through taxes, it appears.

So, if taxpayers are paying for research through billions of dollars in grants to fund research, and also paying at the counter in high prices for medicines, who benefits?

Your incumbent reps' re-election campaigns, it would seem.

All of the promising stem cell research has been done with adult or cord stem cells, which do not involve abortion. The pro-death faction, however, has been pushing embryonic stem cell research, which requires the death of children to provide the stem cells. It has been a fraud all along.

The elite few who will be deemed by the Health Secretary fit to receive these treatments because they are too expensive for the serfs. Cost/Benefit, you know.

It’s anything to grow government — get more and more on the government payroll — then tell them to march and riot when their jobs have to be cut.

The largest union will be the U.S. Healthcare Union.

I believe that distinction currently belongs to the UK. (7.7 of their GDP in 2000 -- 9.8 of GDP in 2009).

UNISON and Healthcare HHS together >>>>UNISON is the UK's largest healthcare trade union - over 400,000 people who work in the NHS and for private contractors providing NHS services are UNISON members.<<<<

No it is not.

We HAVE to WIN this election.

It must be a tidal wave -- a TRUE mandate.

Voter TURN-OUT is key and the Dems know it too.
