Traffic cases settled, but deportations loom
Boston Globe ^ | July 3, 2011 | Maria Sacchetti

One early evening in May, a Boston police officer arrested Lizandra DeMoura for traffic violations and driving without a license. In another city, she might have been booked and released for a court hearing. But in Boston, the 18-year-old was jailed overnight, taken to court, and handed over to federal immigration agents, who hauled her away in chains. Now she is facing deportation to Brazil.

“I felt like an animal,’’ DeMoura, who has lived here since she was a child, said in a recent interview in her lawyer’s office in Boston, wearing an electronic monitoring device around her ankle.

Her case - one of three to emerge in recent weeks - lies at the center of the contentious debate over Secure Communities, a federal program pioneered in Boston that uses fingerprints supplied by police and other law enforcement agencies to detect illegal immigrants.

The cases disprove for the first time claims by Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis that the federal program, as implemented by the city, is only being used to root out serious criminals.

After the Globe presented him with these examples last week, Davis urged US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to halt deportation proceedings against them. Davis said Boston joined the program to sweep out violent criminals, and would withdraw if cases such as DeMoura’s are widespread.

“I’m disappointed with what I’m seeing,’’ Davis said, adding that he has asked the immigration bureau to review the noncriminal cases.

It’s only non-criminal for illegals.

Like in LA where they would tow your car at a DUI stop but they would let an illegal call a friend to pick it up to save them the towing/storage fee’s.

Absolutely outrage! The nerve of authorities doing that to such a person. [sarc]

Lizandra, you need to grow up and think this problem out carefully.

Here are some suggestions.

1. Go to Brazil. Look at it as an opportunity; you know, like when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. The economy there is booming. There are probably good jobs available for English-Portuguese translators.

2. If you decide you hate it there, then apply to emigrate to the U.S.A. Meantime keep working, educating yourself, and preparing to return to the U.S.A.

In the end you will be a much better person, and one that doesn’t whine, wring her hands, and bitch about being a victim.

Seize the opportunity, Lizandra!

Right on!!! That’s the way it should be.

As if she and about a dozen of her relatives wouldn’t be back here in two weeks.

She should thank or blame her parents for bringing her here illegally.

AMAZING to see that Boston is able to deal with illegals better than our governor (Rick Perry) here in Texas will permit. Really sad that a few people want him to be president.

How long has she known she was illegal?

What has she done about it up to now?

“It’s only a crime if you get caught”, right?

I refuse to allow these relatively rare cases to sway me, the invading parents put the kids in the situation, using them as anchors anytime they can get away with it.
Actions are supposed to have consequences, say goodbye.

“I felt like an animal.”

No, just a common criminal.

Exactly. Cry me a river. I have noticed that for liberal consumption, they always paint some maudlin portrait.

Start showing gang members. Show how MS13 operates. Tell the truth about La Raza and their beloved Aztlan.

The cases disprove for the first time claims by Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis that the federal program, as implemented by the city, is only being used to root out serious criminals.

Another observation. Notice how this starts with an attempt to placate liberal leftists. Although being here illegally is, well illegal, an effort is made to calm the lefties. Commissioner Davis asserts that the law will be applied only to those deemed 'serious criminals;. After some time, the left agitates more, and the program is canceled.

The term 'moderate' is used to placate or to hide an agenda from the public. You either have leftist sympathies or you don't.

Don't trust anybody who calls him or herself a moderate. All it means is that they are using cover to hide an agenda, and can apply whatever rules that they want to.
