I haven’t kept up with it since I don’t ride anymore but it looks like Michigan is on its way to going helmetless again.

Personally I’m not a fan of helmet laws for adults. However, I’m also not a fan of paying for years of care for severely brain damaged people who did it to themselves.

The Michigan law will have some restrictions attached like a rider must be over 21 and have a minimum number of riding years under his belt to ride without a helmet.

One thing I have observed about helmetless riders is that few of them have grey or thinning hair.

Other way around down here in Texas. Most of the helmetless crowd around here are older people (middle-aged-plus) on Harleys and other cruisers.

With modern sportbikes, no helmet can be a huge problem for the rider as the speed one naturally wishes to go on the things, combined with the angle of the little windshield, means that no helmet = the wind tries to take your face off. Most sportbike riders that use the highway generally wear helmets and at least partial gear these days.

I’m in this camp as well. However, as medicare/medicaid collapses and federal programs of all sorts fall short of promises, my guess is that these patients won’t be making it out of the emergency room in the future like they do now to be cared for by society.

Freedom to ride without a helmet will mean the rider and the rider only will bear the brunt of their willful decision. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, and I think most riders who want to ride helmet-less will agree that this is the case.

This should give pause to all freedom-loving folks. We build large government bureaucracies and they will eventually tell you what to do for your own good. Destroying freedom in the name of safety - the true motto of all government bureaucracies.

haven’t seen this year’s version of the helmet law, are they still putting in the massive insurance rider clause?
