LAFAYETTE, NY (WSYR-TV) New York State Troopers say one man is dead after a motorcycle crash near McClary Road and Route 11 in LaFayette on Saturday.
New York State Police say 55-year-old Philip Contos of Parish was part of a protest against motorcycle helmets.
Police say several motorists from the group ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for Education) of Onondaga County had come together to make a point that they didn't need their helmets.
The group was driving south on Route 11 in Lafayette around 1:30 p.m., headed toward Lake Como, just south of the Finger Lakes.
Police say Contos suddenly hit the brakes and lost control of the motorcycle.
According to troopers, Contos was thrown over his handlebars and hit the pavement as his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle skidded toward the guardrail.
Contos was still alive when crews arrived at the scene and was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to police, Contos was not wearing his helmet, as required by law. Witnesses say this decision was part of the protest.
Police say that based on evidence at the scene and from doctors, Contos would have survived if he had been wearing a DOT-Approved helmet.

You attempted to introduce excertory functions in this thread AND hijack it to your own personal preference for discussion.
You've done that before.
Account for yourself.
Typical faggotry.
Lie about me and not even a courtesy ping to your lie.
“You’ve done that before.”
You’ve actually threatened to shoot me before. (I didn’t take it seriously- but maybe I should have) You have anger and gay issues. I’m just an engineer, man - your problems are way beyond anything I can help you with.
Good luck, now find someone with something in common with you to post to, will you please?
Can you cite one of these laws that involved the safety of the individual and not the safety of others? Speed, drunkeness etc, all concern the individuals threat to others. A helmet concerns the individuals risk to himself. There is a vast difference between the two.
That may very well be. I think the argument can be made that for crashes above a certain speed it isn’t going to help.
Why are you directing that particular sentiment towards me? I thought my commentary on this subject was sensible.
Why would “society pick up after me” when I pay dearly for my own extremely good health and vehicle insurance?
I detest totalitarianism in -any- form and *all* “nanny state” laws.
I already *have* a mother to wipe my nose, thanks.
I am an excellent, -extremely- defensive driver.
My state has a forced lid law so most of the time, I am wearing it.
When I go to a neighboring state that has more freedom and trust in their citizens ability to decide life for themselves, sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.
It depends entirely on the heat index and wind speed.
FWIW, I drive a -trike-.
It is impossible for me to “fall over” at any speed or ‘lay it down’ and cagers tend to *not* want to mess up their fancy cars by hitting something that weighs a freaking half ton.
*Most* motorcycle accidents are caused by cars.
Do ~you~ *always* watch, in an *extremely* hyper-vigilant manner for motorcycles, as I do for cars?
As an aside-from, the phrase “societal obligation” sounds rather socialist to me, frankly.
As an unamusing but apropos anecdote, a dear friend died *because* he was wearing a helmet.
Someone else forced him to lay down his bike, which he did expertly and he tucked and rolled off the road.
Unfortunately, a stupid woman driving a van was busy fiddling with the little dog lurking on the floor under her feet and didn’t break in time to miss him.
His DOT/police issue [he was a Blue Knight] helmet *just* caught the undercarriage of her van.
The paramedics and the troopers at the scene all said if he’d had just a 1/4” more clearance, she’d had gone right over his skinny frame and never touched him.
That helmet caught the van frame and snapped his neck like a twig.
A dozen of us watched all this and everyone saw that right up until that happened, he was alive, alert and actively, wonderfully managing his controlled slide.
I reckon I’ll just sum things up by saying it’s not my problem that you’re afraid to fully live life.
Let’s just bubble-wrap and armor-plate everything/everyone so nobody will ever get hurt.
We’ll be immortal.
How exactly does my “dead bloated carcass” become a “burden to society”?
I’ve never figured out that insane bit of “logic”.
I’m gonna make a wild-assed guess and say somebody in my family would eventually bury me or something.
:)
Pardon me for intruding upon your hysteria but *our* taxes pay for those “public roads”, too, you know.
[Why do I have a suspicion you might actually be the type who likes to “scare” bikers with your car?]
Just in case you missed this unintentional guffaw:
“spraying the neighborhood with puss and stuff.”
The mental image is priceless.
Lawyers and accountants on Harleys...
Whats a new Harley cost with tax and insurance? $25,000?
“Just the clean up of the remains is so much easier and cheaper to do if the head parts are still in a helmet.”
FYI, *most* bikers are right wing.
An inordinately high percentage of bikers are ~veterans~.
You soulless ghouls and vultures are always here, openly, gleefully cackling over the deaths of _your own kind_.
Many of them, men and women who have fought for the freedom you so enjoy.
These threads disgust me like no others do.
You say “Liberals always eat their own”?
Look into the mirror, cannibal.
You are correct, sir.
In MD, where we have the laws, [almost always] rice burner riders do things on the highways that are utterly insane.
In neighboring PA, where there is no law, the riders are some of the best you’ll ever see.
No show-boating, no racing, no insane “I’m protected so I’m immortal!” erratic riding.
Bizarrely, the car drivers seem to be commensurately more aware and considerate of the bikers.
I’ll admit, that last bit puzzles me.
Thank you.
The issue is can the state fairly impose safety laws on motor vehicle operators who use the public right of way and public roads.
People who think not are probably not right in the head.
It’s as though they *hope* you’ll get hurt, isn’t it?
Imagine what kind of mind ~that~ comes from.
Sorry, you can’t prove anybody paid for any particular part of any road except in Indiana or along route 28 in Virginia.
He had on his helmet. It broke and pink/white material went all over the highway.
I called the cops immediately and the next thing you know they are there with an ambulance.
In most accidents they want information of all sorts before they'll send an ambulance. Apparently in Arlington Virginia they assumed ANY motorcycle accident in the middle of a 4 lane highway needed an ambulance.
It's not like I haven't seen these things.
