Perry, Palin aren't running, just enjoying the ride
Beaumont Enterprise ^ | July 3, 2011 | Thomas Taschinger (I bet is a democrat)

Rick Perry and Sarah Palin aren't stupid, no matter what you might think of them. They are riding a comet, and they are in no hurry to get off.

I'm talking about the possibility of running for president.

Neither one will probably take the plunge. Given the realities of modern campaigning and fund-raising, they'd already be in this thing if they were serious about it. Both are content in their real jobs - Perry as governor of a huge state, Palin as a money-making-machine and voice of the hard Right.

But why stop the fun?

As long as they are referred to as "possible" candidates, they have an influence that just can't be beat.

Every speech and political move they make is followed with enthusiasm by the 24-hour news cycle. Witness Palin's earlier bus tour of the East Coast. If she were officially a non-candidate, she'd attract little or no coverage for a stunt like that. But her bus was eagerly followed by packs of reporters who hung around her just in case something happened, like an announcement that she was running.

Turns out nothing happened, except she muffed the reason for Paul Revere's ride. ("Hey, you British! The British are coming!")

It's possible that a wavering candidate can attempt a what-the-heck late fling that defies all the conventional wisdom about how to run for president, but that's risky. It probably won't succeed, and you will probably look like an idiot when your candidacy inevitably craters.

That undoes everything that the earlier tease built up - that you are a serious person who deserves to be considered for the most important job on earth. In the case of Palin, who is wavering on the edge of respectability, that's a mistake you don't want to make.

No, this is something you want to stretch out as long as possible. You give major speeches on important issues. You go to meetings and conventions you'd otherwise blow off. If national interest is waning, you hint that you might be jumping in after all.

And it's always possible, of course, that lightning will strike and party elders will beg you to ride to the rescue if no strong contender emerges. In Perry's case, this raises his stock for a VP selection, though he probably doesn't want that either.

Eventually, the game will end. A front-runner will emerge, or the primary season will be so close that the Hamlet act runs out of steam.

But for a few weeks, or a few months, you are one of only a handful of people who might someday be ... the president of the United States. That's a heady feeling, and in fact you'd almost be a fool not to flirt with the idea.

Besides, if nothing else, you can always tell the grandkids about it some day.

I doubt you read on the level of a fifth grader.

Depends on whatever it is that I happen to be reading at the moment, doesn't it?

Cheers!

Her answer was historically correct. historians have backed her up.

Even an Ivy League history prof who has no reason to like Sarah stood up and said, yes, she got it right.

Did the MediaRats and ProgScum back off? Oh, hell no! They never do.

So, you totally discount the fact that Palin consistently outdraws all other conservative/Pubbie pres. wannabes at what ever venue she attends. Instead, you make decisions about people based on what you read in polls which can be and are manipulated toward desired outcomes. These polls are designed to tell people like you what you want to hear.

Draw has the same meaning as a Internet poll and the answer to that is it is nice to have people that like you, but it does not win elections. If it did Sandra Bullock, probably could win without campaigning. See what I mean!!!!!

If winning is all that’s important to you have at it. You can be like the Marxists who unfailingly repeat failed policies.

You cannot be a conservative if you think you’ve accomplished something by voting for a RINO (aka demrat). History has shown that when principled conservatives run unabashedly as such they win.

But the really basic and essential question is this: Why would I vote for a RINO? He/she is a demrat by another name. Demrats have many names for themselves. These include Marxist, liberal, progressive, socialist and communist. Now RINO can be added to that list.

Marxists can’t run on what they truly believe. Afterall, Marxism has failed where ever it’s been tried. It has repeatedly demonstrated it is nothing more than equally shared misery—except among the ruling elite.

RINOs are either stealth Marxists or they’re just going along with the crowd in power. Either way, they’re simply the Marxist’s useful idiots.

I agree, but if Romney is the nominee, America will be defeated either way. Blessings, Bob

Teflon Romney is no conservative. but whoever the GOP manages to get in the WH and congressional majority will have to contend with the imperial judiciary that makes its own laws almost daily. Sorry about the subject change. Blessings to you as well.

In the absence of any other info Onada will reprise his theft of the presidency. The only thing that will put a dent in his plans is if enough states pass laws requiring the Constitutional standards for a presidential candidate.

I’ve always been leery of the “compassionate conservative” label. By definition all true conservatives are compassionate. The label implies some are not.

As for Bush, good luck with him and his father’s New World Order crowd. IMHO Bush and his father were and are not Marxists. Problem: There is a convergence of some New World Order (NWO) and Marxist philosophies/policies. For example, both Marxists and NWO promote global government. And they both intend to use the UN for that purpose. Can you imagine the likes of N. Korea, Iran, China and Venezuela dictating to US citizens what is lawful and what is not?
