As with years past, all eyes will be on the skies when the U.S. Aviation Museum launches its annual air show, Gathering of Eagles, in Willoughby this July.

The annual air show was canceled in 2008 because of economic troubles and Aviation Museum chief executive officer Tony Mazzolini said the organization is hoping for a big year in 2011 to ensure the event can continue in 2012.

"Today the appearance fee for some of these (planes) can be $8,000 or more," Mazzolini said.

"With that and the rising cost of fuel, it takes a little bit of a fortune to bring them in."

Mazzolini said the museum would appreciate any sponsorship or funding from area businesses or individuals, although he knows times are tough.

"It's understandable," Mazzolini said.

"Everybody is facing the same thing with economic times the way they are. But we do wish to try and continue this educational program and preserve some of this aviation history, especially for the younger people."

Hat Berichon is another aviation museum member helping organize the event. Berichon said putting on the show is expected to cost somewhere around $60,000 and takes the time and energy of a number of volunteers.

"We started in October of last year in planning this thing," Berichon said. "It takes that long to get everything in place."

Berichon said several things should make this year's air show one to remember. Not the least of which are a few planes slated to make their first appearance in the show.

A Douglas A-26 Invader, which Mazzolini said has a lengthy history, including use in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, is expected to be one of the top draws.

In addition to the historic planes, the museum has also arranged to have about 13 pilots, all U.S. veterans, attend the event to share their stories with those in attendance.

Mazzolini said hearing these heroes speak is interesting, especially for children who may not be familiar with the history of American wars.

As special as it is for youngsters, Mazzolini said the event may be more special for veterans.

"WWII veterans, for example, are dying off at a very fast rate," he said. "Many of these old-timers don't have many buddies left to talk to. An event like this gives them a chance to become the stars of their families, at least for the day."

Event organizers also hope to make the event a day full of family fun by adding an inflatable slide and other children's activities to this year's show.

"The only way we can offset (the cost) is if people come out and visit us," Berichon said. "We try to stay family friendly and low-cost."

The show is scheduled to run July 8-10 at the Lost Nation Airport in Willoughby.

Parking is free and admittance is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for kids five and younger.
