Conservative GOP primary voters likely to like Perry's positions

AUSTIN - The just-concluded 82nd Legislature has armed Gov. Rick Perry with a host of red-meat issues to present to conservative Republican voters if he jumps into the wide-open presidential primary race.

But analysts say some of those issues could carry consequences down the road in reaching broader constituencies in a general election match-up against President Barack Obama.

Texas' longest-serving governor burnished his conservative profile with legislative victories that included a no-tax budget with $15 billion in cuts, property rights protections, voter ID legislation and a bill requiring sonograms before abortions.

Two other Perry-backed issues - an immigration measure to ban so-called sanctuary cities and legislation to prohibit intrusive airport pat-downs - could also enhance the Texas governor's stature among conservative activists though they ultimately died in the Legislature.

Even without declaring, Perry is becoming an early favorite among Tea Party activists for his adherence to limited government and his verbal assaults on Washington. Sabato's Crystal Ball, an online analysis headed by much-quoted political observer Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia, places Perry in the top tier of 11 announced and unannounced candidates. The Texas governor ranked number three, behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota...........

On taxes and the struggling economy, Perry said he believes that the government should “cut the taxes. You cut the regulations, and you let the free market again become a very powerful engine of economic growth.”

The Bush tax cuts, which expire at the end of the year, should be made permanent, he said.

I don't disagree with your point I merely wanted to point out if we want a pro-amnesty, pro-Mexico, pro-international corporations granted “favors” in the U.S., you might just as well as have Juan McCain. McCain, as you remember, made his famous trip to Viet Nam and hugged it up with the butchers who slaughtered thousands after the U.S. left.

None of us should have made that decision yet.

There is far too much at stake to rush into a decision at this point.

Race track = mass appeal = revenue generator.

Opera/Ballet/Symphony Hall? If it's not somewhere like NYC, forget it.

Personally? I agree with you. Any time a sports team wants to taxpayers to build or expand a venue, I vote HELL NO.

"Prop C" built a new baseball-only ballpark downtown for the Padres. They assured the fine people of San Diego it would allow them to be competitive where the old football stadium was just too vast and a poor experience for spectators.

The last I saw the team had the lowest payroll of any team and are perpetual basement dwellers—they're tied for last place.

There seems to be a scam, particularly in baseball, where owners pump up a team's roster leading into a public vote for a new stadium and once that's built everyone is cut and the team goes back to nothing. Team owners are basically millionaire and billionaire grifters.

This for good or bad this is incorporated in the Texas Civil Statutes.

Texas' Trust Fund statutes are contained in three sections of state law covering the Other Events Trust Fund, the Sporting Events Trust Fund, and the Special Events Trust Fund.

FR Post by “newsjunkey:

"Perry is not a "social conservative?" He's got a pro-life record in office and out, has had one wife and two kids, isn't supporting gay marriage, talks openly about God and faith... with what part of the "social conservative" agenda does he fail?

He did support Rudy in '08 down in FL but you can tar any candidates based on who they supported in the past. Off the cuff: Palin supported McCain. Twice. Cain supported Romney in '08. Santorum supported turncoat Arlen Spector. Thrice-married Gingrich supported Dede Scozzafava. Huntsman joined the Obama Regime... it goes on."

NOW may be right for once! I thik Perry is a Globalist, one worlder. I will not vote for him.

Perry is pro-open-borders and don't forget he believes in government mandated vaccinations. Can such a person be trusted to repeal obamacare?

I can not bring myself to vote for Perry. He has exhibited an arrogant attitude about his own status as governor in the past and would likely continue that if he were President.

So Perry is still of the belief that when
HE DICTATES all must take whatever drug he demands, still?

Too bad.

And who is going to pay for the deaths? and the tumors?

The illegal alien issue is a federal issue, not a state issue, even though it effects states most profoundly

Perry had within his power to expand law enforcement to address this (i.e DPS, Rangers). Granted he would have faced a dim filbuster in earlier years.

This time he did not have that hinderance, and chose not to make this the biggest priority. Bottom line he and Dewhust missed the boat.

He’s supposed to do everything, dont ya know. That great conservative principle of having the executive write, enforce, and review laws.

I think CW is blaming the Houston population for voting in people like Bill White as mayor and Lee as Congress. The people who vote that way also vote for liberal sheriffs and judges.

Unless Perry acts extra-Constitutionally, he lacks the authority, due to Texas having a weak Governor, to make policies for cities.

This "scam" doesn't merely apply to baseball, in our area "KC Chiefs," "KC Royals (baseball)" each got the approval of the voters to tax themselves to "keep the teams from moving" (as if anyone else was chomping to snatch up a baseball team that has fought for the last place for any number of years, with the Chiefs not doing appreciably better.

The saddest part of all, Jackson County, MO, who voted to tax themselves into the next century, mostly cannot afford to attend a game as it amounts to over $100 for 4 tickets at nosebleed section, with popcorn and soft drinks.

Outrageous, merely to look over at a stadium that caters to local corporations and more well-to-do subscribers from Jo.Co., KS driving to and from, when you'll never be able to take your family.

I agree with you about Perry, anfd I'd guess that most Perry bashers aren't going to vote anyway, because they don't like anybody, and no one is "conservative enough" for them. Sometimes I think it ought to be arranged so Palin and Perry bashers can have four more years of Zero, all to themselves, while the rest of us can have someone else as President☺
