AUSTIN - The just-concluded 82nd Legislature has armed Gov. Rick Perry with a host of red-meat issues to present to conservative Republican voters if he jumps into the wide-open presidential primary race.
But analysts say some of those issues could carry consequences down the road in reaching broader constituencies in a general election match-up against President Barack Obama.
Texas' longest-serving governor burnished his conservative profile with legislative victories that included a no-tax budget with $15 billion in cuts, property rights protections, voter ID legislation and a bill requiring sonograms before abortions.
Two other Perry-backed issues - an immigration measure to ban so-called sanctuary cities and legislation to prohibit intrusive airport pat-downs - could also enhance the Texas governor's stature among conservative activists though they ultimately died in the Legislature.
Even without declaring, Perry is becoming an early favorite among Tea Party activists for his adherence to limited government and his verbal assaults on Washington. Sabato's Crystal Ball, an online analysis headed by much-quoted political observer Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia, places Perry in the top tier of 11 announced and unannounced candidates. gathered at the Governor’s Mansion for what was disingenuously billed as a “support rally” for Gov. Rick Perry,
under the theme, “It’s OK to Be Gay.” As any Austinite with access to e-mail or a cell phone knows by now,
for a couple of months rumors concerning the governor’s personal life have been flying furiously around the Capitol,
the capital city, the state, and indeed most of the Western Hemisphere.
The variations are multiple and quite inventive – we won’t recount them here –
but at their core is the tale that the governor’s marriage is in trouble, that his
wife Anita has/will/may decide to divorce him, and that the issue is Rick’s alleged infidelity,
with one or another member of his administration of undetermined gender.
(Rumors of this sort, about multitudinous politicians, circulate all the time,
but the current Perry rumors are indeed extraordinary in their baroque detail and remarkable persistence.)
His track record against Obama is embarrassingly pathetic. Obama would love to run against Keyes again.

I never got the impression that McCain was a globalist. Perry is. Whenever you get a R up there with bad stuff on his resume, you can be assured that’s what his Presidency is all about. The other stuff, the conservative stuff, he’s faking.
I owe you an apology as I was very wrong about the F1 in Austin not being a race track. After doing some digging I find it is a complete facility to built from the ground up especially for F1 racing. My bad and I sincerely apologize for my rude attempt to correct your assertion.
That said the money is coming from the Trust fund set up to do these type things. Take care.
From reading the above posts, Perry may have a bit of GW Bush big government in him, but he is way more to the right than Mitt Romney and more likely not to cave into the Democrat tax and spend culture. Palin as VP may be what his ticket needs.

I would like to hear his reasons for ending the Bush tax cuts, but as far as supporting the automobile companies - he is from 11th Mich. Livonia and surrounding areas. That's basically west Detroit. He can't tell most of his constituents to screw off. He gets a pass on that.
Your misleading here. The Special session had seveal agenda items. To me, Perry feigned support for SC bill, otherwise he and Dewhurst would have cooridinated it better. Again, he blew it.
He has a sharp wit and can appeal to blue collar types. Would be a nice balance on Romney's ticket.
I'm not pushing either, merely saying that it depends on what your pleasure is as to how you feel about stealing land and money from the taxpayers to support such "entertainment" that few of the same citizens desire or could afford to attend.
If the people/corporations desire such a track, let them raise the money, buy the land and build it themselves.
You can't refer to something as the "public good" when it only benefits a limited amount of citizens who actually like the sport/art.

If we have to go talk to municipalities about such issues then obviously the Perry administration was too weak to overcome the problems facing Texas.
