A District Court judge on Friday halted, at least temporarily, the impending layoffs of almost 40 North Las Vegas Police officers.

The 90-day injunction was in response to the city’s plan to reduce its police force to shore up its dire financial situation.

Dozens of union officers received pink slips last month. Layoffs officially were to begin today, but the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association sued the city, asking a judge to intervene. The case has been in front of District Judge Nancy Allf, who today issued the preliminary injunction.

Thanks for the comments. They seem reasonable to me. What is rather sad, is that this probably won’t have broad implications since Righthaven wasn’t blocking the fair use of it’s own materials.

Oh if it has not occurred already I think we will in fact see judges begin to order local governments perhaps even state governments to raise taxes. No layoffs, no reductions of expenditures, just raise taxes.

Congress should eliminate their seats than make new ones and then appoint properly chastised judges who adhere to their proper role. Of course this means congress and the executive have to do their jobs too. No chance for that. So maybe we should just ignore them.

“Why have elected officials anymore? Dictators in robes are SO much simpler.”

True, and as I said in a post on another thread, even if the GOP gets control of WH & Congress, these dictators will persist in overthrowing a conservative agenda. It takes 2/3 to convict upon impeachment.

Every day we now seem to see some activist renegade FEDERAL judge overthrowing legitimate state/local government decisions. No need for state courts anymore, apparently.

Keep them on the force. Don’t pay them. If they complain, tell them to take it up with the judge.

The city will prevail. Then NLV should sue the police union for loss of funds.

Use Police Officers Association accounts to pay them during the 90 day hold.

“After layoff notifications were made in late June, the union posted signs around the city warning citizens that officers could no longer guarantee their safety.”

Do they guarantee safety now?

Of course not. Any cop worth his salt will tell you not to rely on them to save you if for no other reason than the old time/distance thingy.

Following your point to it’s logical end, how would they enforce this? How far could they go in raising taxes? How high and what happens when people simply throw up their hands and leave the area as is happening now? Would the judge then prohibit a person from moving? Attach his bank account, what?

Where does it end before there is a real revolution in this country?

The power to raise taxes lies strictly with the legislature, State or Federal. A judge can “order” anything he likes but whether it gets done3 is another thing entirely.

Well, that is an excellent question, how will it be enforced. When the luxury tax on yachts was passed in 1990, people simple bought yachts in foreign countries and registered them in other countries. The tax raised almost no revenue.

A judge might attach a bank account but if she or he did you would see a massive flight of capital outside the U.S.
in a nano second.
