In his latest Time column, Republican super-strategist Mike Murphy outlines why the Michele Bachmann surge may be short-lived, and why it helps Mitt Romney for the time being:
Finally, the billion-volt electron microscopes of the national media will soon be trained on Bachmann now that shes the official Iowa front runner. Ill bet dollars to Minnesota lutefisk that despite her new squad of professional handlers, we are in for more of Bachmanns factual fumbles.
Her latest mix-up, confusing the birthplace of beloved American icon John Wayne with that of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, hints that Micheles next moves on the national stage may receive more than a few boos and flying vegetables from the voting public.
This is why the uncontrolled giggling you hear coming from behind the big blue curtain is from Mitt Romney, who must be delirious with joy. For Romney, a two-way contest with Bachmann is a strategic dream come true.
It would draw attention and money away from his two real rivals, Huntsman and Pawlenty, and give him a simple race against a candidate who would remove much of the ambivalence many big-league Republicans still harbor about him....

Mike Murphy, has he ever got anything right ?
Mike Murphy, has he ever got anything right ?
Michelle Bachman did not name the right town in Iowa as John Wayne’s birthplace. BFD! How many trillions of taxpayer dollars did that cost?
Laughably bad article.
Someone posted an article yesterday that showed that his parents did live in that Iowa town and then moved, has the media reported that? NO!
Yeah. Myth’s delirious, all right.
GO MITT! His nomination will hasten the abandonment of the GOP and the rise of a new party that can challenge for the Presidency.
There then appears a consistent story.
Ms. Bachmann hires — and keeps — Palin impugner Rollins
who sets up the woman for a fall for Milt.
Ms. Bachmann is SO taken by Milt, that she calls him
“Mr. President”, even as Romney-legquiver-operative
Wallace insults her for the entire lamestream media.
Meanwhile, Mr. “President” awaits her demise from
Team Romney (Rollins and Wallace).
Michele Bachmann has only shown herself to be a
docile trojan horse for Milt Romney.
What is next, will she support the Global Warming hoax?
Mike Murphy is a LOSER and anyone who hires him is a LOSER!
NE RINO article, totally clueless about America. Problem is, so are many of the ‘pundit class’, such as Bill Krystol, etc.
when, o Lord when, are establishment R’s going to learn that the MSM is pushing romneyfeller because he is the candidate they know they can beat?
This field is still not set. We are such a instant gratification society. Id like to go back to this weeks posts in a month and Im quite sure we will be shocked! Mental note*
I will never vote for a rino again no matter who’s on the ticket with him. In 2008 people either voted for Palin or against obama. Nobody actually voted for McCain.
Mitt must be in total denial.
I don’t doubt it. Split the conservative vote and the RINO wins. Worked real well the last time around.
Yeah, at least she knows in which of the 57 states “The Duke” was born!
Huntsman and Pawlenty are his real rivals? According to what poll? Huntsman is in last and Pawlenty is in 4th at best (6th if you count undeclared Perry and Palin). I don’t understand the logic.
Your missing the point why this article was posted. It’s to advance the argument by the Palin supporters set on destroying the other conservatives in the race. In this case, we are to believe that there is a connection between Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann, and that Romney supports Bachmann’s rise because she is helping clear the field for him, at which time he’ll take her as his VP candidate where we will then all see that MB is only in it for her own gains.
Politico is normally repulsed here because of its liberal bias. But if a story comes along that can be utilized to the advantage of some people creating propaganda against other conservatives, then it suddenly becomes respectable journalism.
Comment #10 confirms this. Nice try though.
