FALL RIVER (CBS) Theres another strange twist after a womans body was found floating in a public pool in Fall River, possibly going unnoticed for days.
The mayor of Fall River says that health inspectors from the City visited the pool on Monday and on Tuesday and inspected the facilities, which was during the time that body was believed to be in the water.
Marie Joseph was at the pool on Sunday and hadnt been seen since. It wasnt until Tuesday night, when some kids broke into the Veterans Memorial swimming pool and found Josephs body floating in the pool.
The mayor said in a statement on Thursday that those city inspectors have been placed on administrative leave.
Investigators have said that, on Sunday, 36-year-old Joseph went down a slide with a 9-year-old boy and vanished.
Were not certain about anything other than the fact that we have a death and that this person was at the pool, and what took place with respect to the slide. Everything beyond that is absolutely under investigation, said Samuel Sutter, the Bristol District Attorney.
The pool was open to the public Monday and Tuesday with lifeguards, none of whom noticed the body under 12 feet of water.
The pools always packed, somebody should have come by and ended up seeing something, said one neighbor.
In the meantime, police and state officials have closed down all 30 of its deep water swimming pools as officials try to figure out what happened.
The Department of Conservation announced every one of its deep water pools would remain closed while officials conduct a full review of each facilitys safety and operation procedures over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Officials have also placed the entire staff at the Fall River pool on administrative leave.
I bet they both have great benefits, long vacations and hefty pensions.
Not true. When they open in the morning, no one is there. You turn on the lights. The pool should be empty, pristine, and easy to view.
Also at night.
"Everybody out of the pool!" and perhaps five minutes later, the pool is once again empty, pristine, and easy to view. THEN you turn out the lights.
Two days? Exactly how dirty and opaque was that water? And how unbelievably lax were the workers?
I don’t know how you can blame the inspectors. There’s probably nothing on their inspection checklist about doing a visual inspection for dead people.
Indeed. And after “everybody out of the pool” one would expect the lifeguards to inspect the pool as well. This isn’t rocket science.
“Investigators have said that, on Sunday, 36-year-old Joseph went down a slide with a 9-year-old boy and vanished.”
Well...these ARE state employees. Probably unionized. I am guessing just swimming in that pool would make three strikes right there.
And no-show jobs...
I tends to have a negative effect on the plutocracy for which they pimp for.
They thought, “She’s not dead mate! She’s pining for the fjords.”
Correction: They claimed to have inspected.
There’s a lot of public inspectors who just drive their public vehicles, cash their paycheck, and inspect things at their own leisure.
Really sucks for those that actually do their jobs.
“The pool should be empty, pristine, and easy to view.”
Yes. It’s a POOL, not a lake or some other murky body of water.
And don’t they have any life guards?
And, what about the 9 year old? What relationship if any did he have to this woman?
Was she there all alone?
Rule #1 - never swim alone.
Oh please, you’re blaming the school system? How juvenile & asinine.
What about the life guards and the hundreds of other people swimming around with a dead body? No one noticed a thing??? If the inspectors didn’t notice a dead decaying body, what other nasty things went un-noticed in that water?
At first the go to the bottom, then after a couple of days they pop up, but in a pool one would think they could see the bottom of the thing.
Do you think it is a coincidence that this happened right after they caught Whitey?
Under certain circumstances, a sudden inrush of water up the nose can trigger unconsciousness. Such may be the case in this situation.
As for why the trough feeder “life guards” didn’t see the woman, there is a simple reason They are to protect the living, not the dead. It is a case of “No my yob”.
