President Barack Obama called on lawmakers Wednesday to overcome the "selfish" norms of politics and "do their job" in order to strike a deal on raising the federal government's current $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by the start of August.
People shouldn't get "spooked," but "the yellow light (is) flashing," he warned. "This is urgent."
Top economic analysts have warned of potentially catastrophic repercussions if the ceiling is not raised by August 2, including skyrocketing interest rates and a plummeting U.S. dollar.
The president blasted congressional Republicans for refusing to consider raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans as part of any deal. Congress needs to be willing to "take on their sacred cows and do tough things" while moving away from "maximalist positions," he said.
He said Congress should cancel upcoming summer vacations if a deal isn't struck by the end of the week.
"I want everybody to understand that this is a jobs issue. This is not an abstraction," he said. "If the United States government, for the first time, cannot pay its bills -- if it defaults -- then the consequences for the U.S. economy will be significant and unpredictable. And that is not a good thing."

As a Senator, Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling and blowing it off as a non-emergency so what makes it an emergency now?

Notice how the MSM conveniently leaves out that the Rats haven’t had a budget in 2 years?
Want to end it, this is what McConnel needs to do. Go on CNN and say that the Democrats want to tax our retirement funds now.

A Republican of anything even approximating Reaganesque skills would go to town with this. They would use Obama's own stupid pronouncement against him, and go down the list. The man is a living, breating piñata of stupidity, just waiting to be hit with a bat. His ridiculuous utterances can be refuted one at a time, with humor, that at the same time illustrates his inadequacy and out-of-touchness with devastating impact.
Where is Sarah Palin? Instead of playing cat-and-mouse with the media about whether she will or she won't, why doesn't she come out with a daily video containing her responses to the nonsensical spewings of the moron in the White House?
Where is Herman Cain? Where is Rick Perry? Is there not one single Republican of prominence who can take advantage of the opportunity to illustrate the foolishness of this man?

The only thing the GOP needs to do is to be blindly obtuse when the subject of tax increases are raised.
Lack of action means less government spending authority.

I have written my congressman 3 times telling him if they cave on raising taxes, any taxes, or raise the debt ceiling, you can kiss the GOIP goodbye.
the Tea Party will take over and the GOP will become in history like the Whig party, only to be found in history books.

Yours are the words of a prophet, Tom. By these deeds we shall know him/her. The one that makes and goes down that list will be our leader.

Mr. Obama, what about a 15 percent sales tax on all partisan candidate campaign spending? A “sin tax” on influence buying. Exempt would be issue-centered campaign spending.

Odds are the GOP, that spineless bunch of nitwits, will give in. I have lost faith in the entire Washington bunch of idiots. Americans are being sold a bunch of the worst smelling crap in it's history and it is destroying America.

I have a suggestion for the stupident and the Dimocrats. We will allow raising the debt limit if you pass a law, effective immediately requiring the credit companies to immediately raise ALL the limits on ALL the credit cards by an amount of $5,000. And this is regardless of credit score, ability to pay, income, work ethic, etc. I think that would help all the millions out of work and behind in their payments to get out of debt.
After all, if the government can, why can't we?
