Easy fix for your register trays.
Ban pennies. Round all transactions up to the nearest nickel. Now you have a slot for dollar coins. Stop printing $1 bills. Now you have a slot for $2 bills.
Now you don’t have to buy expensive copper for the pennies.
Do away with pennies and, someday, nickles.
The dime should be the smallest denomination.
That leaves room for $1 coins and, someday, $5 coins.
But those $5 coins should be midway in size between the dime and the quarter and be one tenth ounce of fine silver.
A silver dime in 1940’s was about 10 to 15 minutes of wages.
A silver dime now is worth about 10 to 15 minutes of wages
BUT that 10 to 15 minutes in wages is about $3.
So a silver coin a tad larger than a dime should be $5.
Oh, and a penny in the 1940’s was about a minute in wages.
Nowadays a minute in wages is about a quarter (12 cents at minimum wage).
