I WAS WRONG ABOUT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE and got the zot (again)
CNN ^ | 6/27/11 | David Frum

Posted on 06/29/2011 8:15:42 AM PDT by No Brainer

I was a strong opponent of same-sex marriage. Fourteen years ago, Andrew Sullivan and I forcefully debated the issue at length online (at a time when online debate was a brand new thing).

Yet I find myself strangely untroubled by New York state's vote to authorize same-sex marriage -- a vote that probably signals that most of "blue" states will follow within the next 10 years.

I don't think I'm alone in my reaction either. Most conservatives have reacted with calm -- if not outright approval -- to New York's dramatic decision.

Why?

The short answer is that the case against same-sex marriage has been tested against reality. The case has not passed its test....

If people like me had been right, we should have seen the American family become radically more unstable over the subsequent decade and a half.

Instead -- while American family stability has continued to deteriorate -- it has deteriorated much more slowly than it did in the 1970s and 1980s before same-sex marriage was ever seriously thought of.

By the numbers, in fact, the 2000s were the least bad decade for American family stability since the fabled 1950s. And when you take a closer look at the American family, the facts have become even tougher for the anti-gay marriage position.

Middle-class families have become somewhat more stable than they used to be. For example: College-educated women who got married in the 1990s were much less likely to get divorced than equally educated women who got married in the 1970s.

What's new and different in the past 20 years is the collapse of the Hispanic immigrant family....

Hazing a newbie is a time honored tradition.

Troll hunting is a hobby of some. Some are very good at it; some are not, but they like to try.

Welcome to FR. Post well. Ignore the flame bait.

The whole thing's a bit strange: right now more than ever, conservatives need lots and lots of supporters if we are going to have any chance at all of getting the current regime out and things returned to our core values.

Attacking any and all newly-registered people as potential trolls is counterproductive and wasteful, not to mention odd.

I have no idea who you are but I will make my judgements based on your posts and if we need to discuss things, then we will.

I know who I am and I am proud of who I am and what I have contributed to my country (28 years active duty). I am not impressed with the reception so far..Does Jim Robinson approve of these types of welcome?

I’ve traded a couple FReepmails with Chainmail, and have no reason to doubt he’ll be a good addition to FR.

It takes a while to learn to navigate our waters. Heaven Forbid he could have run afoul of the blog police!

We were all n00bs once, I even got a beat down from A+Bert!

welcome to the baptism by fire, chainmail. As with any anonymous site, we do get suspicious of new screen-names up to a certain point.

I think we can all see by your reponse that you share our feelings against "gay marriage".

The "gay marriage" approval in NY has angered all of us. Not only that, it's pushed into the limelight the fact that gays have infiltrated everywhere and aim to push their agenda in each place.

Take care, keep your statements simple for the first few months (for idiots like me who can't read :-P) and then you can become a prophet and post prophecies :)
